Nylander for Gio.... Jesus. Gio is a top 15 dman in the league. That makes us a much worse team this year.

When did Nylander become a #1 goalie?
Apparently our window is open.

Haha, are you mocking the window idea even after being shown that you yourself were describing a window in your own words?

Actually I'm not.
Good franchises don't have a window.

Well it doesn’t necessarily have to ever close.

In a cap world, it is impossible to keep the window open forever.
That's why teams need to go for it while it is open.

Your window really depends on if you can get quality players on their ELC's making the NHL. Our window was always closing because we never had prospects that could make the cut or were not being put on the team because management wouldn't allow it.
Now that Dube and Valimaki have made the squad with Magiapane and Andersson falling right behind them, we are going to have more cap space to sign a goalie and Tkachuk.
That's how teams like Chicago a few years back and Tampa Bay now have stayed so competitive. Solid drafting and prospects that can either fill in when needed and eventually on the main squad.

Brian Burke was on the fan here in Toronto this morning, here's some interesting tidbits:
- Flames were very much in on Anderson, offered the 35th overall pick. Murray picked up the phone and told the leafs to beat that. They gave up the 30th pick
- Burke called sutter about Phaneuf 3 days before the trade went down asking about Phaneuf, was told he was not available
- day or so later, Burke talking to Brian Murray who asked Burke if he was in on Phaneuf. Burke calls sutter asking wtf, sutter promises he was going to call him back about it
- they all knew something was up with Phaneuf in tge dressing room, but turns out it wasn't a beef with Iginla but other players on the flames
- sutter rejected original leafs offer which required aulie be included
- agreed to include aulie if leafs added a player (jamal frigin mayers)
- 'sutters cannot lie' deal was agreed on Saturday, but Sutter needed to get it cleared with management. But all players were playing that Saturday. Sutter promised he'd honour the deal even if all the leafs got injured that game. No one got hurt, deal went down

Sam Steel was that 30th pick, Edmonton kid, looks like he made the Ducks this year too.

I love hearing hockey people open up and share these stories. Burke's always bean a beaut for that.

My own Nylander speculation...
To Flames: 1st round pick
To Leafs: Hamonic, 2nd round pick
3rd team: Nylander
Leafs need a D and wanted Hamonic in 2017, Flames need to move a RD and could use some draft picks, someone out there needs a Nylander (we can't afford him)

Why are the Flames trading Hamonic for a 1st?
Why are the Leafs trading Nyander for a #4 dman and a 2nd round pick?
None of this makes sense.

Why do you say that? the Flames would have nearly 6 million in available cap space, I highly doubt William Nylander will get anywhere close to the rumoured 8 million his agent is seeking. (same agent as Johnny Gaudreau btw)

Sorry, my post was unclear.
We would trade Hamonic as we have too many RD and are lacking high-end depth in the pipeline (IMO)
Leafs need a D and have had interest in Hamonic. They can't afford Nylander but Hamonic isn't enough value, the 2nd is to supplement the loss.
The third party gains Nylander for a 1st & 2nd, which is a reasonable price. Perhaps another pick comes our way.

With Tkachuk going RFA next year, most of that cap room will be lost

Nylander is going to get close to 7M and with Tkachuk's contract coming up that will most likely be in the 6-7M range.

Leafs better get a much better D for a 22 year-old blue chip proven forward.
