The serious problem with bad ideas is that you can get otherwise perfectly normal, well adjusted people to believe them, and thereby make them do terrible things. Indoctrination doesn't work on the mentally ill or disabled alone - I'm not even sure it works better on them than the average person.

I don't disagree with this at all, we have plenty of examples of people doing horrible stuff when part of a larger cause. I just don't believe the two shooters from California were playing with a full deck of cards.

On what evidence?
I know it's comforting whenever something terrible happens to tell ourselves that it must have been the work of a lunatic, but it's just not the case. Some people are just very committed to a particular world view, and are so sure they're right that they're willing to kill and die for that world view.

To me their level of planning and preparation, their ability to hide in plain sight for a long period of time, and their creation of a shooting justification (staged argument with a co-worker) points to a pretty clear and precise mind.
I don't think there was a level of mental illness or impairment for these two.

I think that Hillary has run a pretty horrible campaign. It speaks to the strength of her opposition that she's still in the lead.
|
Then what does this speak to?
Quote:
The Vermont senator’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination has received a record 3.25 million individual contributions, more than any other candidate for the president.
The Sanders campaign raised almost $33.6m in the fourth quarter of 2015, it said, with 70% coming from contributions of $200 or less. Sanders’ campaign has now surpassed the huge funds raised by Barack Obama’s campaign in the first quarter of 2008, before he defeated Hillary Clinton in the primary election.

Hey I think Sanders is great, but he's right now the anti-establishment vote which is terrific, but I think he's the anyone but Hillary home more then a guy running a solid presidential Campaign.
To me he's like the Jack Layton of the Democratic Party.
It was funny, but I was curious and looked at Hillary's top campaign donors.
Citigroup $824k
Goldman Sachs $761k
JP Morgan $697
Time Warner $500k

Talk about being beholden to special interest.
I'm amazed Sanders isn't waving this list at every rally.

Probably waiting for it to be a bit later in the process when it will be more impactful and not forgotten.

Ted Cruz trotted out that hillbilly duck hunting guy today to rant and rave about the wicked sinful evil that is same-sex marriage. Will this be enough to stir up the rubes and defeat the Orange Devil? Time will tell.

I'm as conservative as the next person, and I spend half of my time watching these Republican Candidates and slap my forehead and wonder what the f they're going on about.
The Republican party is becoming the party of the small minded idiot. Its become more and more clear to me that whether its Trump, or Cruz or whoever that comes out of the Repbulican primary they're going to get crushed.
Not because the Democrats are better run, or have better leaders, but because the Democrats have slightly less volatile idiots running for election.
Maybe an embarressing Kim Campbell esque destruction like the Conservatives went through is really needed here so that the Party can be burned to the ground, the angry old idiots running it can be chased out with pitch forks and it can be rebuilt to reflect modern times instead of the 50's.

On Friday, “Trunews” host Rick Wiles aired a speech that Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty delivered at the Vero Beach Prayer Breakfast earlier that day, in which Robertson offered gruesome details about how an atheist father would react to watching intruders behead his wife and rape and kill his two daughters while they also cut off his penis .... which would supposedly somehow prove a point about following God’s laws.
“I’ll make a bet with you,” Robertson said. “Two guys break into an atheist’s home. He has a little atheist wife and two little atheist daughters. Two guys break into his home and tie him up in a chair and gag him. And then they take his two daughters in front of him and rape both of them and then shoot them and they take his wife and then decapitate her head off in front of him. And then they can look at him and say, ‘Isn’t it great that I don’t have to worry about being judged? Isn’t it great that there’s nothing wrong with this? There’s no right or wrong, now is it dude?’”
Robertson kept going: “Then you take a sharp knife and take his manhood and hold it in front of him and say, ‘Wouldn’t it be something if this [sic] was something wrong with this? But you’re the one who says there is no God, there’s no right, there’s no wrong, so we’re just having fun. We’re sick in the head, have a nice day.’”
“If it happened to them,” Robertson continued, “they probably would say, ‘something about this just ain’t right.”

Just met a real life Trump supporter.
And it was someone I otherwise respected the intelligence of.
"He's the only one speaking the truth"
Sigh.

Obviously easy access, lack of education, no proper back ground checks, etc, etc help make it worse, but I don't believe all those things are what makes someone want to go shoot someone else.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with gun control. I just don't think gun control by itself will solve the problem.
Sanders is on the right track.

Which track is that, voting for blanket immunity for gun manufaturers and complete opposition to background checks right up until the Sandyhook massacre?

Early reports suggest "unusually high turnout", which you'd think is good for Trump and Sanders. But since this is caucusing it'll be interesting to see if those supporters truly understand how it works. Could definitely see (more likely from Trump side) supporters leaving before the process is done.

Here's the thing I don't get with all the Trump Sanders love, as soon as either of them need to run a national campaign they will need to fundraise like everyone else which means off to Wall St with the knee pads on, again, just like everyone else.
Trumps billions and Bernies little old ladies cake money isn't going to pay for a national campaign.

Continuing the WTF is going on campaign that this is, Cruz appears to be beating Trump in urban areas, Trump is beating Cruz in rural areas, and Marco Rubio is almost winning evangelicals.
