I feel like the Flames are just trolling the fans with this stuff.
This whole excersize feels like a corporate middle finger to their investors.
Ah well, if they want ppl to stop caring about the team, this is the way to kill average fandom. Sadly for us nerds we are all about the pain and suffering. We are the Catholics of Flames fandom.

It sounds like the classic car salesman's gimmick of "You drive a hard bargain, I'll need to run it past my boss. He's not going to like it."

I dont think I'd believe that for a second. Its more common for owners to be a part of major transactions, especially ones where millions of dollars are being spent on retention, amd especially with the way Murray Edwards operates. There's no way they wouldn't be involved in millions of dollars in retention in a trade.

I would venture a guess that every teams ownership is involved in decisions to pay big money to have a player not play for you….in every sport….on earth.

If ownership won't retain on Kadri, he's likely playing out his contract in a Flames jersey.

Did everyone miss the part where Dreger followed it up with "...like most owners"?

I think Edwards is clearly involved, as most owners are. It would be odd if they weren't.
It Coleman is traded and retained, that's 3/3 retention spots used. I believe that Flames would be the only team in the league with all spots used. It's tough to criticize Edwards if the Flames are already retaining more than anyone else.
Markstrom and Andersson would clear up in the summer. Coleman the next year. So for a guy like Kadri, with more term left, it could make sense to use the last slot for later.
Though personally, I think Kadri should be traded now, before he gets any older.

That's fair, and I don't mind it. So in that case they should pivot and trade Frost.

Hockey Ops should have a budget to achieve certain goals. Rinse and repeat repeat, every year.
Conroy also just saved $30M+ over the next 5 years on the Weegar deal.
This regime probably has goals to build a cup contender shortly after the new arena arrives. So hopefully, Conroy has complete authority to do what he needs to achieve that goal, including retaining salary (and saving the owners a lot of $ in the process).

Well at least now some of us have something to complain about. Selling Weegar took the wind out of the sails a bit there.

Conroy is a pretty good salesman and negotiator. I think if he had a deal he really liked with retention, he would pitch it with the benefits and get it done.
If true, I feel like it’s more likely the deal was mediocre and he took it and said well it’s an okay deal but I can take it or leave it. Who knows maybe it’s just the car salesman saying I have to run it by my manager and he comes back with well we can’t do that but how about you put this much more in.
And… if you say you’re playing them and I really want them on my team, I probably call you and say I’d rather you sit them, I really think we can iron out a deal tomorrow… If I didn’t call, I’m not that committed to getting it done.
