They are about 5 points off the playoff pace right now (on pace for 85 and the playoff line will be around 90 probably), so it's not unheard of.

Also with Utah, Seattle, Edmonton, and San Jose as the teams in front of them in 6-9 spots right now it's not like you have to pass teams that are unbeatable.

Although that's not really new news either TBH. Insiders here have said Flames were unlikely to retain unless they were being compensated heavily to do so, and TBH I don't think the Avs had the assets to cover what retention would cost.

I get these guys can be wrong and sources can be misinformed but feels like it would be an insane move for a media person to just baselessly claim something and pass it off as fact.

I call bs. Kyper gets a lot wrong. I have heard from many sources including guys in the know like Steinberg that Conroy has full control over the team and all transactions including retaining money. Conroy doesn't have to go to ownership to get permission to retain money.

If that's the case, fine! Retain on Coleman and circle back to trading Kadri in the summer.

Yeah I would go so far to say its not true...the reason Coleman isn't traded yet is because they might use the retention spot on Kadri

I'm sure the story will be wildfire for clicks though
