They might have. Or Weegar is in decline and the Flames de-risked by unloading a player with a lot of term at a hefty price tag.
It's actually a great price based on Weegar's play THIS season.
I think it's a win/win. Utah gets a player who probably needs a change of scenery, is a great leader, and has had two great years before this season. They're also assuming quite a bit of risk and there's potential the deal ages poorly for them.
Flames get ultimate flexibility and have all the ammunition to move up in the draft this year in a class they've got to be very familiar with given the season they've had.
