As far as I read, there is no actual proof that anything untoward happened. They found him at a place that was under investigation.
No one is saying otherwise. He wasn't found committing a crime and as such, he wasn't charged with any. This story doesn't have any affect on my voting decision or how I feel about the NDP, but picture it the way it has been described: Jack Layton goes to a massage parlour at night in an establishment that just two weeks ago had been raided by police and was ID as a bawdy house. The police enter a room where they find Layton lying naked, on his back, on a bed and the police officer on the scene makes a note of the fact that he saw the "masseuse" throw a wet Kleenex into a garbage can. Replace the name Jack Layton with Joe Schmoe and you're probably thinking that he was getting more than a massage.

That does remind me of another hopeful Sun cover for tomorrow: Royal Wetting (with Jack and a kleenex box of course!)

So you should have been upset when the CBC ran story after story about the escort at a PM party right?
I honestly don't know what your talking about?
In general though this is a different situation not based on who's involved, but because the story is 15 years old. Its really scraping the bottom of the barrel and its really just not fair.
I would actually have a lot of respect for Harper or Ignatieff if they said "Let's just focus on the issues" when it comes up tomorrow.

A) How is it not fair? The Liberal's and NDP were bringing up quotes from Harper from the 80's to cast shadows.
and neither Harper or Ignatieff have even bothered to comment on this as far as I've seen, but they're certainly not going to come to Jack's defense because there are questions of morality here.

If any party leaked this, I can't help but think it was the Liberals. Everyone associates the Sun with the CPC. They'd have to be complete idiots to leak it to them and think that no one was going to draw any conclusions that they lit the fuse. Right now, looking at comments on message boards, I see two groups: one that is disgusted with Layton because they believe he solicited a prostitute and another that is disgusted with Harper because they believe that he leaked this story. It should be very telling based on what kind of response (if any) Harper and Ignatieff give towards this.

The difference is that the quotes are about the actual issues being debated, this is just dirt and a small step from gossip. I don't know what the law is here, but how can the officer in question release all of this? Seems pretty shady?

I'll probably say this is mainly SunTV's doing. They're what, less than a week old? They wanted attention.

Timing wise it's pretty safe to assume that whoever had this info was sitting on it and when they saw a surge for the NDP...released it. They also have to be awfully dumb too, you always release "bad news" on Friday nights when the news cycle buries it in no time.
Put me in the "who cares what he did 15 years ago" camp, but him claiming he didn't know it was a brothel......really?
He was either lying or a complete moron...he has to pick his poison on that question.
I'll admit that something like this leaves a really bad impression and makes me wonder why are reporters muzzled, why is everything scripted? If you're afraid of tough questions, then maybe your policies are narrow and don't appeal to most Canadians. If you're afraid of renegade candidates, then maybe you should have a platform that attracts a better crop.
I've never voted Liberal but the values Dryden espouses sound like the Canada I want.
Now why hasn't this leader shown up during the campaign?
A slip up by Layton earlier today when he suggests that the Bank of Canada shouldn't increase interest rates, and then is forced to back off on the comment later on in the day.

I'm starting to wonder about the national polling numbers and the NDP surge. I'm looking at 'Project Democracy's' site and they are doing some professional polls on 'close' ridings to determine who to recommend to oust Harper and surprisingly their results show that when polling on a regional level the NDP surge doesn't seem as high in these 'too close to call' ridings. Also at times it shows the conservatives showing more support than expected. This might very well be more interesting as it breaks down seat by seat and how that reconciles with the national/provincial numbers. Maybe a CPC majority might still be in the cards?
Not that I'm against a CPC majority, I just know we are headed for another minority government. Not sure how anyone would suggest otherwise. This country is divided. And not necessarily in a very bad adversarial way. But divided.
I think I'm more of a Layton supporter after this one.
Lets leave the stupid smears to the American politics shall we? I know our campaigns have been getting dirtier lately, and I'm not proud of it, but up until now, though dirty and attack based, they have still pretty much focused around issues and election stuff. IE, smears about records, misquotes, etc. We haven't been 'Swift Boated', thus far.
This takes it to another level.
I don't care if he did or he didn't. This is as stupid as the Monica Lewinsky deal. I don't care about sex our leaders are having or not having. The fact that its 16 years ago makes it even dumber. And the fact people are talking about it makes me even sadder.
I swear, I'll vote (hell join, petition, campaign and through my hat in) NDP just for this if all you don't wise up and see this for what it is.
EDIT: And I really don't wanna do that. I was going to vote CPC. But politics is more about the people than the candidates. And if this is the way our elections are headed, I will vote against those campaigning dirty to try and dissuade it.
