There's no spinning this. Coleman and Kadri both now want out and this was (rightly) created by the team management. You started down this avenue, now finish it because the rest of the players are watching how these guys are being treated and it will determine their future commitment to the club and the reputation of the team and how it treats its players. Conroy ####ed up the Markstrom situation in a similar fashion, not getting the trade done in the window expected and alienating the player. That ultimately worked out for the team, but when the same things happen with Coleman and Kadri, that becomes a trend and how a reputation is earned. So yes, I think this is a total failure if those players aren't moved as expected.

What if Kadri and Coleman wouldn't move for the teams that tossed in bids? They both probably want out cause the team sucks but they could be sticky on where they are headed.

If the offers are underwhelming, there's really no rush to move either guy outside of giving yourself more room for dropping in the standings, but that's not guaranteed anyway. I really hope we didn't wait too long.

We had 2 absolute scrubs who honestly i havent even heard of bring in a second and a third yesterday, Im not buying the buyers market narrative. Cole Smith sounds like Jon Beecher and just got a 3rd

That golf walkabout didn't chill you out much.
It doesn't require spin.
Markets change. The players aren't expiring. You make a decision.
If we learn of them asking too much, or missing the market with concrete details we can certainly discuss "epic failure" but without that there isn't much there.

That's the nature of markets. The longer you wait and the more sellers that enter or exit the market the market shifts and shifts quickly. Calgary owned the market for the longest time and I think Conroy felt they would always own the market, right up to the deadline. I think he navel gazed a bit and didn't keep an eye on the standings. As a result other teams looked at where they were in the standings and whether they wanted to push for the mushy middle and made smart decisions to take advantage of the seller's market. Unfortunately, multiple teams with great assets entered the market at the exact same time and that dramatically shifted the market to where it became a buyers market because of the quality assets available.

To me, it appears he waited too long. He should have got this done before the Olympic break and not allowed other teams that period to think and strategize. That allowed multiple teams to shift their commitment to the season and enter the marketplace with their better assets, devaluing ours and making deals less likely to happen. I think he over-played his hand. Hopefully that is wrong and he manages to move out a number of players for good assets, but there are just so many more options out there now that teams have more choice and can probably get better returns for less.

If MacKinnon truly asked management to reacquire Kadri, I'll be surprised if he doesn't go to the Avalanche.

I completely agree with your entire take. Not to mention hurting our draft odds this year, and you will not get a better offer for either at next year's deadline, they are aging assets.
It would be a complete failure if we did not trade both before the deadline.

TBF, Conroy learned the biggest lesson and that's to not let UFAs walk so there really isn't much pressure to make these moves this year. Outside perspectives will point out the ages of the players involved and noting this might be the best time to move them for some value as they are depreciating assets.
So , are the offers going to be better or worse for Kadri/Coleman in the offseason or next deadline? Is there a risk of having thing depreciate so quickly that hindsight might win the day in this debate.... Next deadline.
Personally, I don't see any offers for either player getting better from this point onward. The trade environment in the league isn't as juicy as it once was.

I don't really see any big moves being made right now. It isn't like Conroy is somehow screwing up.
I think Kadri is plan B, C or D for some teams. However, if I am Conroy, I see him as my #1 priority. If Kadri pouts the rest of the season, will Conroy be able to even move him in the off-season? Or will teams simply assume that father time is knocking on Kadri's door? 3 more years of term on a guy who may or may not be getting affected by father time is a roll of the dice, and I am not sure any GM wants that. I think Kadri should (and will) get traded this week.
Coleman is the guy that I think you can wait on. He is entering the last year of his deal, and he he hasn't fallen off any cliff at all - playing some of the best hockey he has played. There is a lot less risk with his deal, so I think more teams would be willing to trade for him this season and next.
I think everyone else will go pretty much on deadline day. So if Hanley, Pachal or Lomberg (or someone else) get moved, it is probably that day.
That's how I see things anyway.

According to Puckpedia, Vegas has plenty of cap space once you consider their injuries. Now maybe that changes in the playoffs, guess it depends who comes back and what kind of team they want to ice. I haven't gone that deep into it.
But the retention on Andersson was quite little and only for this year. Flames could have potentially looked for someone to take on that retention and it should not have cost that much. Retention on Coleman and Kadri is way more valuable/expensive.

I have trouble understanding the Flames line of thinking, assuming this is accurate.
They were willing to take on contracts / salary in order to "weaponize their cap space" but are unwilling to retain on Kadri to move the player and get a better draft pick or return?
Because they at least want a contracted player if they're going to eat money?

Nuke has looked really bad since coming back. He is also owed a lot of $$$. Will he waive for Calgary and can we rejuvenate him to the point where we can sell him in 1 or 2 seasons?
Nuke + Ross Colton is taking on much more cap and real dollars than Kadri alone. Can Colorado pay enough assets to get Kadri + Coleman?? It'd have to be 2-3 1st equivalent I'd think if we took on the equivalent cap and more $$$ coming back.
Gulyayev + 2 future 1sts? Throw in Hanley or Pachal. One stop shop for Avs - makes them the favorite IMO.

I don't think this has ever been an unwilling to retain issue.
It's a number of slots issue.
And they don't have Coleman done without retention.

I think it's less so that they "won't", and more to do with they only have one more retention slot. So if they retain on Kadri, they won't be able to retain on anyone else. I am not sure how long until some older retentions fall off and open a slot. But regardless, I think they are willing to retain, but the juice has to be worth the squeeze. If you need retain salary for the next 5 years to get a second round pick, is that worth it? It's about opportunity cost.

I can almost guarantee you flames will not be retaining 50% of Kadri remaining 3 years. . Maybe 10%-15% tops.

If it's just a number of slots issue then, to me, it's Kadri that's the priority to move this deadline.
We've already seen lesser rentals go for 2nds, so Coleman can probably still fetch close to a 1st next year as a rental.
If we're to believe the media insiders and those here on CP, there's more appetite from the Kadri camp to move and maybe even risk of being disgruntled if it drags on much further, much like the Markstrom situation.
Add to the fact that his return probably only depreciates if you hang on to him until next season, just move him. Get the best you can and don't get too cute.

Dreger said a few weeks back that we had great offers on the table for Kadri. So it seems we either waited too long, are over valuing our players, or as he speculated refuse to retain salary in a deal.

No more waiting for the next deadline please.
There's no way there isn't a bad contract to take on on a Coleman trade to have the effect of retention.
