That's true, but contenders get greedy. They don't want to subtract anyone from the room; probably because the team is performing better than the sum of its parts and they're afraid to remove the wrong part. It's like playing Jenga with the roster: they want to make it tall enough to win the Cup, but solid enough to remain standing… so they cheat by adding extra pieces.
The Andersson trade reminds every GM of this. It seems Whitecloud was more important to Vegas than they thought. So every buying GM would rather have salary retention than give up a roster player, no matter how overpaid or underperforming.

Can any of our other insiders lighten the mood and give us their own best guess in terms of % chance they think both Kadri and Coleman will move this week?

Nichushkin, Colton, Brindley 27 1st for Kadri and Coleman. That's dollar in and dollar out.
Flames then flip Nich to Dallas to complete the circle of life.

Wouldn’t doubt he wants to trade both. That said with only 1 retention spot it’s going to be tough.

Sounds like an awful lot has changed in the last 24 hours? I thought the market was super hot on both Coleman and Kadri and there's a good chance both are moved, plus some of our other depth pieces like Lomberg. Now we're thinking we come out of the deadline with likely only one trade?
I don't know which i want to do more between Kadri and Coleman. It sounds like we will have to retain on either one. I think Coleman returns a lot more, but I'm also thinking maybe we should take advantage of the fact that Kadri has any value right now. I think Coleman retains his value better this summer or next deadline.

Sounds like the kind of circumstances in which the league voided several other players' contracts in the past. It's a wonder he's still on Colorado's payroll, and the league hasn't voided his contract so he can sign with the Oilers for the league minimum.
I would have concerns about him coming back in a Kadri deal to make the cap work.

That is true, Coleman could still get a decent return next year. I doubt Kadri would keep the same value.
I do wonder about everyone saying this is a buyers market. But then the trades today pointed to the opposite. Weird.

Sure, I am going the opposite way and saying 80% both move. Does that make you feel better?

It probably has to do with a lot of the new salary cap rules now at the trade deadline. Calgary only has 1 slot to retain and they have to pick between Kads and Coleman with other teams wanting retention on both players.

It's a fluid situation right until the deadline. Some GM may go crazy or everyone may be bluffing and sit on their hands this year. No point in stressing after every insider report. Especially when the assets the Flames have are not expiring.

Maybe teams are just now realizing how difficult it will be to dress a 20-man roster playoff team - including TDL acquisitions - that fits under the playoff cap, despite being cap-compliant throughout the season. What's the point of acquiring the big boys at the TDL if you can't fit them on your playoff squad along with the players from your existing team that you most want to play during the playoffs?

I wonder if a team would be willing to retain as a third party on Coleman,
What would about $3M over the next season and half be worth

Not allowed anymore, which is why GMs are frustrated by the new rules.
Edit: more specifically, a player has to stay with a team for x days before traded again with retention, I think?

And Colorado has one of the league's worst powerplays so that could be extra frustrating to him.

If you have any chance to trade Kadri now, you do it. He seems to have some perceived value that makes him moveable now. I think it will be harder later. If this means keeping Coleman for now because of retention spots I’d be ok with that.

Incorrect, a third team could retain as long as Calgary didn't. It's only double retention that requires a 75-day interval.

It was 75 days between retention for double retention but I'm not sure if that applies if no retention is applied by the first team.
In this case the Flames wouldn't be retaining.

You cannot retain as a third party this close to the deadline.
