The trouble with mental health as a diagnostic method is you can't tell which of the 50% of the population that have some history of mental health issues are going to lose it and kill themselves or others.
If you did use mental health as a reason to remove access to guns it would become an almost 100% ban on guns in society, far more than any straight gun ban would cause, there really isn't a family anywhere that doesn't have some member that hasn't had some history of depression, addiction or the like, a gun ban based on mental health would have to remove access, not just ownership for anyone that had ever had to take an anti depressant or had a history of addiction or violence
Frankly it is easier for society at large and hunters everywhere if we just severely limit what kind of guns you can have and why you can have them, you don't need nor would any hunter I know use a hand gun or a semi auto to hunt deer, if owning a gun that makes you feel like Rambo or Reacher is a really big deal to you then you are clearly not the kind of person who should be trusted with a gun in the first place, personally I think all guns should be painted pink with baby blue polka dots just to limit the attraction to wack jobs
