I just assumed 'bears' had replaced 'George Soros' and meant Jews.

90-year-old-woman fights off bear with her lawn chair

Quote:
‘I was just sitting here, hadn’t been here more than two or three minutes. Evidently it heard me. It just made a lunge at me,’ Williams told WVLT.

Williams said the bear’s ‘face was right in my face’ when she used a lawn chair to stop it from getting closer to her.

She emerged from the encounter with just a scratch on her arm. She was treated at a hospital for the wound and came out with a bandage around it.

‘I’ve been praising the Lord ever since then, because I may not be here,’ said Williams.

Last weekend while riding 1A came across a bear frolicking in a meadow about 300m off the highway and then later on two were grazing right near the overhead sign for 1A at the lake Louise end.

It was pretty cool seeing them somewhat up close. The were not the least bit interested in the people gathered to watch them.

Again, all those ecosystems have been permanently changed when bears left. We did that, and we can't undo it. Least we can do is learn from it and try to prevent more of it happening.

Mountain town my ass. Who the #### cares about your recreation habits?
I think they’re just gaining intelligence and staying out of the US, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Smart bears.

OoooOhh, that’s a dilemma. I hate voles and mosquitoes equally. Voles keep our cats entertained in the summer while mosquitoes keep birds and bats well fed. I guess based on that I’d say voles need to go before mosquitoes.

I'm not trying to be obtuse or anything here, but I don't give a single fata about that. Humans have changed the ecosystems every where we go. I accept that and am fine with it.

Forgive others for not being as zero ####s given as you are.

Immigrants used to have your perspective when they first settled in NA. It was seen as a huge pot of near unlimited resources and was treated that way. It took a movement of people seeing the fault in that approach which led to preserved land and resource management becoming a thing.

If we had continued on that path things would be much worse than they are today. Forests eradicated, numerous species we see today made extinct, no national/provincial parks to enjoy. Just new properties and developments everywhere without exception. Just think of Louise but lined with lake front summer properties and being treated like a dumpster puddle. It would be terrible.

I'm glad we're being kept in check and that some good people began that between 100-200 years ago. Without them, a grizzly bear might be something we just read about in books.

Agreed. But we're the ####### generation who has taken it too far and are not planning at all for people's enjoyment 50, 100 or 200 years from now. We needed another Banff 20 years ago to accommodate the visitors we get.

It's a fair thought. There are a couple places where I would like to see limited tourist developments akin to those we have already. Small areas with accommodations to help spread the tourist crowds out a bit.

We have some huge stretches of highway through beautiful areas with absolutely no facilities the entire way. 93 through kootenay and the icefield parkway being two. Maybe that means just adding to what's at the Sask River Crossing already. Its a juncture where multiple highways meet and could use some year-round establishments, and isn't near the natural "jewels" along that drive.

We don't even really need a "new Banff"; Lake Louise is right there. Is there a reason to think that someone has stood in the way of expanding that town to be, in effect, a second Banff?

Who wants to spend more time in a mountain town anyway? The beauty of the mountains is not seeing other people.

Agree on Lake Louise and Saskatchewan Crossing.

SC is basically nothing, and it would be great if it were built up to accommodate some tourist traffic and offer more places to stay. Problem is that parkway can get extremely bad in the winter (from what I’ve heard, never attempted it).

Lake Louise is a terrible town but still a huge destination for a lot of people. Ample room for improvement and it’s not like there’s any worry of attracting too many tourists. They can’t even handle the ones they get now.

We don’t need a new town. They just need to do something better with the places tourists are already attracted to/passing through.

I'm not a fan of this, 'humans don't have the right to occupy a space in nature' mentality. It's the reason I'm shoulder to shoulder with like a million people in banff today because we won't build more mountain towns. We don't "infringe" enough. Animals can fata off and exist a mountain range over. Honestly, we have a pin pick of development in the mountains. It's nothing.
That would be the Purcells where we have even more human development than in the Rockies.

Y'all looking in the wrong direction. Opening up the Crowsnest Pass, and creating a tourist destination in Sparwood, between Frank and Fernie, would see a massive benefit to the entire southern part of the province. Lethbridge and Pincher Creek would double their traffic.

Proximity to the border, and general geographic location, Alberta should focus on growing this region. It helps that the UCP have been forced to put the brakes on completely leveling the area for mining. It's beautiful down there, and would provide a bridge between Waterton and Banff, with easy access to skiing and (during the summer) one of the best drives to BC that there is.

Bear encounters I've had:

- sniffing my tent in Yellowstone
- rocking my car in Yellowstone later that same night
- 30 minutes of watching and taking pictures from within 50 feet on the Dempster Highway (inside the vehicle, window rolled down)
- nearby on the Chilkoot Trail - close enough the group ahead of us was yelling to scare it off
- missed hitting one on the highway by what I can only guess was a matter of inches

All memorable for one reason or another. Relocate the people - leave the bears where they are.
