This seems like a great trade for both teams.

How many goaltenders have returned a 1st round pick over the last 20 years? Schneider is the only one I can think of, but at the time he was young and extremely highly touted, so an entirely different trade than this Markstrom deal.

I think now we know why Fitzgerald was throwing his tantrums. With the NMC clause, he knew that NJ was the only place Markstrom was going to go and Conroy was dragging his feet because the offer wasn't getting better.

Not that the value isn't fair, I think this would be about what you'd expect for an older goalie, but man expectations got set sky high

Markstrom is worth a 1st + Mercer at minimum, with no retention. Never forget!

CP Before TDL: Markstrom is an elite goalie, has one of the best goals saved above expected. 1st and Mercer absolutely needs to be pieces coming back. Anything less is a fail.

CP Today: Markstrom is 34 and aging. Getting a 1st is a great deal.
