Everyone pretty much is in a cap crunch, and getting a player in this draft that can possibly play this year or even next year may be too hard to pass up on.
But like with all things, time will tell.

The three biggest trade chips will go at the draft. The rest they'll have to dance a little in terms of offseason trades or deadline decisions.
I can't see Conny not capitalizing on this very deep draft if he has to move any of Toffoli, Lindholm or Hanifin. He's a draft nerd. I believe he knows this is likely the best time to maximize asset management.

The other thing the Flames need to do is being open to take a contract back.
For example let's say Detroit is really interesting in Hanifin, and would move 9th overall. But need the Flames to take $3M of Olli Matta to do so...then 100% the Flames should do that.
You can help teams alleviate the cap crunch by taking a player for them, and generally you open up the market and get a better return if you're willing to do that.

Yup, add someone like Zadina in there too as far as Detroit goes.

If Detroit was to target someone on the Flames it should be Lindholm over Hanifin. They are set on d and their forwards could be an issue.
Zadina would be a good target with high end picks

I have doubt that’s what he’ll try and do.
I’m just not so certain other teams will comply, especially if teams sense he’s anxious to pull the trigger prior to the draft.
It takes two teams to make a trade. Yes, Calgary wants to take advantage of a deep draft. Other teams are just as anxious to keep those early picks in this draft.

Listening to Friedman on with Pat he confirmed with all the chatter he is hearing Hanifin is definitely going to be available for trade. He said no one in Calgary will confirm it but from what he has heard from others he is definitely available

Why do I feel like a deal involving Hanifin for Nylander isn't as far fetched as I thought it'd be?

I don’t see Nylander as a guy who “wants to be here” in terms of long term in Calgary.
Just don’t see it happening as much as it seems like a natural fit.

Trade value definitely there, but I doubt Calgary is that interested in getting a UFA to be.
Trades of Lindholm and/or Hanifin need to bring back younger players with more control, as there should be sufficient demand for those players that the Flames can get those types of assets, although do to the tight cap everywhere, they may need to take back some bad cap.

I have no problem dealing Noah. Especially if he wants a 7 or 8 year deal. He's not the #1 on a championship teams. Realistically he's a good #2 or #3, so why should he get a long term franchise deal? If the Flames can rid themselves of 2 of Markstrom, Coleman or Kadri, I wouldn't mind signing Noah to a 5 year deal but anything more I'm just reluctant. Too many non-core pieces not performing to expectations already locked into long term deals is making me skeptical of wanting another one added to the list.

Zero chance he accepts a 5-year deal. Lots of dmen below the 1 standard get 7-8 year deals, look at Seversen.
I doubt the flames get rid of 2 of those 3 guys since they are likely not shopping any of them. They are likely shopping 7 UFA’s to be to at least assess their trade value, while also in some cases discussing possible contract terms.

If Hanifin leaves, it will be a big hole to fill. He logs a lot of minutes, sort of like Brodie did.

And yet, we managed to fill those minutes, did we not?
What you have to think about is whether or not Hanifin is "the guy" to lead a team in the playoffs, or at least make a significant impact. Those are the guys you give long-term contracts to. Everyone else is just a good asset that you can move for good value.
Build up asset capital, strike when the iron is hot. This is the way.

To be clear; Friedman did not use the word ‘definitely’.
He said ‘there’s a feeling out there Hanifin is going to be available’. He went on to say he thinks Hanifin will be available.

Detroit is definitely poised to make some moves at the draft with that collection of picks. Hanifin, Debrincat, or someone else but I think they will use some of those picks for an impact player

Is this an appropriate time and place to winge about losing Valimaki for nothing? I’d be even more comfortable in moving Hanifin in a world where we still had Val.
