Playing him against the Oilers this year worked super well!.....

10th in takeaways.
Yeah but they were 4th last year in giveaways.

Teams that possess the puck give it away more often.

So not sure there's an eye test match at all.

Was specifically talking about the defensive zone but the number look similar.

Just seems like the defensive zone isn't as clean as last year, cleaner breakouts and quicker.

Impossible to measure.

But you don't post up similar expected rates without having the puck a similar amount of time.

Sites like natural stat trick and money puck, I wonder what their quality control model looks like? Are they relying on their own counts and observations in coming up with their stats? I have always assumed so.

These aren't huge operations generating much money, so it's not fair to expect too much. If baseball umpires have different strike zones with their amount of training and scrutiny, then certainly the people used by these websites could have quite different interpretations, not to mention make mistakes.

It's always questionable when you get the information for free but it's probably pretty close.

Still think advanced stats have a big part in telling the picture but not the entire picture.

Appreciate the work people like SuperMatt and Bingo do putting together and finding the information

I'm really hoping Vladar has the capability to be a starter, as that opens up the possibility to run 1A/1B. Even if Markstrom re-finds his game and takes back the starting net, I think it would be really beneficial to reduce his workload during the regular season so that he is more fresh for the playoffs. I think someone did some good analysis a while back showing that almost every goalie who has won a cup in the last 15 years (or something like that) played significantly fewer games in the regular season than Markstrom did last year. Markstrom is somehow still on pace to play close to 60 regular season games this year which seems totally unnecessary given Vladar's competency.

I recall reading that long ago, and thinking at the time that it was statistically insignificant

So typically you have 5-10 goalies who play 60 games, out of 30 ish teams (now 32). Last year it was 5, and of those, 2 ( Demko and Hellebuyck) didn’t make the playoffs.

They concluded that only 2 goalies in the past decade had played over 60 games had won the cup

That is a very small sample size, and really not disproportional to the number of goalies who get that number of starts

Any year, you have about 1 in 3 to 1 in 6 goalies who play the higher number of games. 1 in 5 won the cup in the decade they looked at

Really no conclusion to be drawn from that

Figured something was up with how they were rolling in Millen.

Hopefully he’s getting the support/help he needs.

Agreed, some things are more important than hockey. That being said I love Millen and hope he stays on with Rick permanently. Just a much more enjoyable colour guy.
