rag on JB all you want, he did exactly what he said he would do. Acquire a 3rd line center (Dickinson) top 6 forward (Garland) and a top 4 defenceman in OEL.
The Canucks are also moving Holtby and Schmidt and a possible Virtanen buyout to create more cap space too.
Miller - Pettersson - Boeser
Hoglander - Horvat - Garland
Pearson - Dickinson - Podkolzin
Motte - Highmore - MacEwen
Hughes - OEL
Rathbone - Myers
Juolevi - Hamonic??
that is a solid lineup SO FAR, JB is not done yet.
|
Wait, that third line is supposed to be good (top 9)?
And I sure as hell hope JB isn't done yet!
Edit: and wow that first pairing is going to bleed goals out the wazoo. Hughes was minus-what, last year? And OEL is a huge liability in a larger role.. to be paired with defense-Neal?

He consistently has had a lack of offensive production. But he did have a helluva KHL playoff.
I don't what he is at the NHL level.

That OEL deal ain't great though. This isn't so much a "get out of jail free" as much as it's "get out of jail on bail while you await the inevitable dismissal of your appeal" card

I think playing in a hockey mad market with good players around him is a recipe for a bounce back.
Now I'm not expecting him to be a norris defenceman or anything but basically a more mobile younger Edler with offence.

If you trade a top ten pick you should be getting a star back
Before I even opened this thread I knew which 3 posters would be defending it

Given that both Pettersson and Boeser are bound to miss time due to injury this looks like a solid lineup for a lottery pick.

I don't think you know who Jason Dickinson is, he's a really good 2way shutdown center. Pearson was on our 2nd line last season, is getting bumped down where he belongs in the 3rd. Then you add in Podkolzin who is also a 2way forward and you've got potentially a good matchup line.

A Hughes-Ekman-Larsson paring is going to be a thing to behold... for all the wrong reasons.

He was pretty impressive in the KHL playoffs, but yeah, who the hell knows when you bring a guy across the Atlantic. Could really go either way.

Yep. I just tried putting together a roster on Capfriendly. If you assume they buy out Holtby and Virtanen, sign Dickinson for 2.8, Garland for 4.5, Juolevi for 1, and then fill out their roster to 21 players using the cheapest guys available (all sub-$1M deals for younger players, including Podkolzin) then they have just over $12M left to sign both Pettersson and Hughes.
And those are some pretty optimistic contract numbers.

you should worry about Tanev more. He's riding a healthy streak, but with Gio gone, you guys cannot afford to lose Tanev for a period of time.

Garland is an excellent player and will put up good numbers in Vancouver. They paid a pretty hefty price to get him and out from under those other contracts.
The defense did not improve and may get worse with Schmidt out the door.

I'm just relieved it wasn't Calgary.
Two long-standing rumors can be put to bed today
Ristolainen to Calgary
OEL to Calgary

Hard to say whether this deal or the Ristolainen deal was more laughable.
