Craig Morgan @craigsmorgan
Flames GM Brad Treliving said newly acquired RHD Michael Stone is "a style fit" who could end up playing w/TJ Brodie or Matt Bartkowski.
Well with the recent Brodie-Engelland pairing, looks like this quote pretty much implies Wideman to the press box.
Craig Morgan @craigsmorgan
GM Brad Treliving said the fact Calgary has 5 games before March 1 was a big factor in getting Stone deal done now; may help a playoff push.

No mention of Jokipakka either, so you'd have to assume that this is the depth chart:
Left:
Giordano
Brodie
Bartkowski
Jokipakka
Right:
Hamilton
Stone
Engelland
Wideman
As it should be.

Flames Acquire Michael Stone From Arizona for Draft Picks

3) Treliving gave away a CONDITIONAL pick stipulated on Stone RE-SIGNING
4) Bettman released a statement stating teams will be punished for trying to circumvent the expansion draft by avoiding resigning pending free agents until after the expansion draft.
So by deductive reasoning, we know the Flames intend on signing Stone (hence the condition and statements) and cannot do so after the expansion draft. Since when did deductive reasoning = reaching?

Okay Bettman, good luck trying to enforce that. In no way are any teams obligated to sign their UFA's before the expansion draft. LV already gets an early 48 hour window to negotiate with UFA's and none of those UFA's are obligated to sign with Vegas either and can sign with whomever they want after the draft. I can see it now:
Bettman: "Mr. Stone you are to sign with LV this summer, no ifs ands or buts."
Stone: "Go #### yourself"
Calgary re-signs Stone after the expansion draft.
Bettman: "Calgary you will be punished for signing a UFA who was fully allowed to sign with any team they wish."
Treliving: "Prove collusion. Also, go #### yourself."
Bettman is such an ass.

Said by Daly, not Bettman but:
Quote:
McPhee wisely worries that a team or two might do a "drawer deal'' with a pending UFA but not officially sign it until after the expansion draft. Why? Teams don't have to protect pending free agents because they aren't eligible for the expansion draft. Here's an example: If the San Jose Sharks didn't officially re-sign Joe Thornton until after the expansion draft, they could protect another player.
"There has to be a high level of diligence to make sure those things don't happen and to make sure people know there will be significant penalties imposed if they were to screw around with the rules,'' Daly said.
Daly said violators of the expansion rules forgo a first-round draft pick, so penalties in the same vein would be "appropriate." New Jersey Devils GM Ray Shero insisted anyone would be crazy to attempt that type of circumvention.

I don't get people saying Wideman has to still log minutes. Everyone already knows he's trash and he's a risky pick up. Wether he's playing or benched isn't going to increase or decrease his value. We're not pulling the wool over anyone's eyes. Anyone who picks him up knows they're taking a chance that a new scene might awaken the offence he used to provide however any chance of him resembling a serviceable defencemen otherwise is gone. Most likely after this season we never see him play a regular season game again. Trading him for anything at this point is a steal for us.

At first I wasn't too sure about going out and buying a UFA being a bubble team but after reading all of the posts I like what this guy will add. There is a risk to lose him but then learning that Treliving has history with him to kind of makes me think the chances to re-sign him might be pretty good.
I haven't been as critical of Wideman as most and think there will be someone that will take a chance on him for a playoff run. That being said, if this move puts him in the pressbox I have to think the chances of him using his NMC went from slim to nil.
Good move, now get a right winger by next week and I'll be impressed, the goalies I can live with.

I like that any upgrade/improvement to our D also hopefully means an improvement to our G, allowing Treliving to perhaps adding a W.

The more I research this the more I like this trade.
UFA status with essentially little risk in expansion draft a major bonus!
Classic buy low situation with Stone having a horrendous UFA season for multiple reasons.
- ACL/MCL knee injury March/surgery with long rehab.
- Brand new baby twins at home (DOB Oct 1 2016) without family supports likely took a toll on his sleep schedule too!
- Bad team with nothing to play for.
Treliving gets a D-man just entering his prime years with really good 2nd pairing stats last year before knee injury. Treliving and Maloney have the book on him.
Arizona also did a solid for Stone given family ties to Calgary and twin children less than a year old and 2nd pairing opportunity for playoff run. Good on Chayka.
Knee should be fully rehabbed now. Family supports for twins in place and a team playing for something. Not to mention getting paired with Brodie.
We will know in the last 20+ games who Michael Stone really is.

Now we just need a top 9 RW that can help put some pucks in the net.
Need more snipers than Monahan. Gaudreau, Versteeg are playmakers and 3M while are good 2-way players aren't particularly gifted shooters any of them. And Brouwer and Chiasson are just kind of there.
I have hope that Ferland can eventually become a 20 goal guy. He has the shot. Just needs to be more consistent with his tenacity.

bit late to the party, but this seems to be a pretty good deal for the Flames... i mean it's not a steal by any stretch, but if this sits wideman, i consider it a positive...
no offense to any wideman fans, as he did have some good years here, but boy... this year has not been friendly to him...

This is a very good point. I think Brad would have been planning to sign Stone in the summer regardless, so this is a small price to pay for a test run of a guy who could have been a liability of a signing otherwise. On top of that it helps the playoff push, and on top of that it shows that the team is serious about winning.
On top of that, doing it this early allows Brad to go make another move for a forward closer to the deadline if the team looks good over the next 5. The west is completely wide open this year and is total garbage past Minny and San Jose, who the Flames both have a great record against.

Solid trade by Treliving once again. I wouldn't call him a #4 D-man right now, based on his play this season, but hopefully he finds his form again. They just need to be careful and not give him a a bad contract in case he's not able to fully recover from his knee injury.
