Looks like it was December 30, 2001. 4-1 loss to Finland.

the last time was when they lost 4-1 to Finland in a group match in 2002 ... their leading scorer was some fellow named Mike Cammalleri.

They would probably lose or he would sit on the bench opening the door for the others while they won the game.

They didn't even do that this game.
They sat back and tried to hold prevent Canada from scoring and then relied on lucky bounces to score.
They rarely tried/were able to create chances against Canada.

So he would be in McDavid's spot, essentially?

Ok McDavid did a dumb thing but you can't bench him in the 4 on 4 ot and then use him in the shootout. Does that make any sense?
Either play him or bench him.

This might be a fair commentary if both teams were considered as equals. When a lesser team holds off a tournament favourite and capitalizes on their mistakes then I think it's fair to say they deserved it.

Of course. They led the whole way.

If he has shown to be the best guy in the SO on the team why not have him go in the shootout?
Plenty of guys don't play in OT and then take a shot in the SO in the NHL.

Karma for Canada being the dirtiest team in the tourney for quite some time.
USA! USA! I hope Gillies shuts out Canada.

There isn't a single thing to like on Canada. They're not even top 3 in this tournament and have been out played for a number of years.
They play a crap game and the other teams have figured them out. I'd be shocked if they got anything better than Bronze.
They're also a team filled with dirty players. Dirtiest team in the tournament for sure.

But it's different when you've been benched the latter third of the game for making dumb plays and taking stupid penalties.
