Wow, the indie music crowd in here resembles canucks fans with their "we're the best cause we're so different, Nickelback sucks, everyone knows that" lines.
You people might as well be plugging your ears and repeating the same thing over again. Sort of like most people at the stadium were plugging their ears in the 2nd intermission at the game. Everyone around me was commenting along the lines of "wtf?" and no one was getting excited and into it from what I could see. Doesn't make that a right or wrong opinion - but it's a fact that not too many people were excited about it.
Look - you hate Nickelback because they are so popular, and they don't "evolve" as a band. Doesn't change the fact that they are the most popular. It's like hating on the Habs because of all their Cups - doesn't change the fact that they've still won 24 of them. And no, I'm not a Habs fan by any stretch.
I have a music degree and a performer's diploma as well. I'd never heard of Metric before yesterday - mostly because I don't listen to indie music. And yesterday reminded me of why I never do. Emily Haines had a terrible singing performance, just awful. The music was depressing instead of upbeat - NHL would have been far better off hiring Nickelback or other recycled stuff we've all heard before - at least they would have pumped the crowd up.
Seems the organizers tried too hard to be different.

The bold is what is unfortunate with music right now.

Seeing as though you are obviously an amazing performer based on your credentials, could you please play a song in -15 weather by any chance and put it up onto youtube. I don't play any instruments but I am going to assume it is difficult to play one in cold weather based on the obvious finger dexterity that is needed.
It seems more like you went into it with preconceived notions of how horrible it was going to be and as is the case with a self-fulfilling prophecy you weren't disappointed.

I do see where you are coming from. They're not really my thing, but I see no reason to rag on them. Bands and musicians that I don't necessarily like are always on TV or in public and I couldn't care less. For some reason, Metric at the HC is really stuck in some people's craw. I think that is why Nickleback became the example here. People who don't like them are bombarded by them in all types of mainstream media all the time. It seems like most of the people that don't like Metric are the same ones who hadn't been exposed to them often. It's rare for a band like Metric to get a showcase like this, and right away people start complaining. I don't think it's really fair to Nickleback fans either though just because that band is overexposed..
I can't understand how anyone could have thought the music that Metric played was depressing by any means though. I am willing to bet that you went into it with your mind already made up.

I think if your a musician and you truly love what you do, you'll take any chance to play in front of 40000 people, it shouldn't matter if it's minus 15 degrees out. I know I would jump at the chance to do it and I'd like to think I would give the best performance possible. If that was Metric's best than that's great for them but I am not surprised they didn't impress the masses from the sounds of it.
Just glancing through this, one should understand that you do not go to a hockey forum and expect to see people with good taste in music.
Wow. What's it like up on your magic pedestal, looking down at the great unwashed masses, who somehow out number you if you look at record sales. Oh wait, that's just the brain washed masses who clearly can't think for themselves and choose what sounds good to them. Thank you for casting your ray of light and helping convert a few lost souls.
"This is the way of things... blah blah blah."
This takes me back the the Closing ceremonies bull "Thou must love only Neil Young or the gods of music shall cast thee out"

His whole post was totally discredited as soon as he described Metric as depressing. Metric may be a lot of things (poppy, coked up, sloppy, mellow, etc.) but depressing isn't one of them.

Just an FYI, pointing to record sales as a clear indicator of superiority is not only a terrible argument, it's a logical fallacy.

Where have you been for the past year, living under a rock? It baffles me that people haven't heard of Metric. There is a lot of great music coming out of Canada at the moment--don't miss out.

I can sort of understand not hearing of Metric as they don't get any airplay on top 40 stations, and they're music has too much pop in it to get played on commercial rock stations like CJAY. What baffles me are the people who only listen to those types of stations claiming that the band must not be relevant because they've never heard of them.

Discrediting a band because the play a simple style is also a teribble argument of a bands worth. Millions choose to buy Band A's record because there's something appealing about the sound they've created. Maybe it's generic and they're not as talented as band B, but they've come up with a formula that works.
I like almost all styles of music, and there's a time and place for most. I like Metric, but it's sure not what I would have picked to pump up a crowd. Just my opinon, and I'm not going to crap on anyone for liking them or not liking them. Everyone's allowed their opinion, and no individuals opinion is greater than anothers when it comes to music taste.

Well as one of those that said it sounded terrible at the stadium I listened to some on youtube and it really isn't much better. So I am not sure that the -15 excuse holds much water.
It means he wasted a bunch of time in school. Because if he actually used it for something, he'd be telling us how he's a professional musician or teaches music or something.
I am a professional musician and I do teach music actually. Swing and a miss.
I felt Metric was terrible. So did most of my section and those around me, judging from the comments I heard and the general lack of people getting excited and out of their seats.
That's fine that you liked them - different strokes for different folks. Even the worst band out there has some fans....just like the Ottawa Senators still have some fans.
My general issue here is how the Metric apologists feel the need to ridicule others who don't share their indie music tastes. Because at the end of the day that's all it is - a personal taste.

I think I mentioned I'd never heard of Metric before, so no I had no preconceived notions. I'm not ragging on them at all, just didn't like their style, and thought the lead singer's actual performance was terrible, whether understandably due to weather or not. Considering you don't need finger dexterity to sing or hit a tambourine.....I'm not too sympathetic.
Then again I'm probably the only CPer that likes Nickelback....so to each their own.
