I actually have gone into quite a bit more of the 80's than I have expected to. Oingo Boingo, Television, XTC etc. They are all bands I am happy I have stumbled into. The Talking Heads though are the best of the 80's Before Dire Straits' 80's stuff and SRV.

Wasn't a huge Metric fan before this but I thought they were excellent.

Loved them yesterday....been a fan for only a few months and hooked pretty bad.
Went to walmart today and smashed all the Five for Fighting 8tracks in the discount bins.

And the giant screen, that would be synched up with the sound that travels slower than the light from that screen. Right?
Can't believe how many people haven't heard of metric/would prefer Nickelback. Unbelievable.

Just glancing through this, one should understand that you do not go to a hockey forum and expect to see people with good taste in music.
That being said, there are some things that should be common knowledge in music by now, even on a sports forum.
1. Nickleback is awful. Everyone knows that. All you have to do is listen to them and you can figure that out.
2. If you haven't listened to any music from the past couple decades, then your opinion does not have any credibility when discussing music from today.
I do not really have much faith in the general populace's taste in music, mostly because not too many of them spend time looking for good music; however, that being said, two things happened in the last couple weeks that somewhat renewed my faith in the "mainstream's" tastes. First, the Black Eyed Peas performed at the Super Bowl and everyone routinely recognized how bad they were. This is good. More people need to understand that they are terrible. Secondly, the Arcade Fire's "Suburbs" won for album of the year at the Grammys. More people need to understand that they are (if nothing else) important, so this is also good.
As for my take on Metric, I think they are solid. However, I prefer the super group to which Emily Haines and James Shaw also belong.

I prefer to call them "Theory of a Puddle of NickleCreed." I was saying that this was common knowledge by now. There are more people that know that they are not delivering works of merit than those that think they are. The onion ring won in the facebook poll, right?

Pickle One can only imagine how many more fans there would be if it was an onion ring.

She sang her songs perfectly, not pitchy or out of tune, and in the freezing cold. Makes me wonder how the black eyed peas can hack their simple notes so bad. I guess they were just used to singing along to autotuned boner jams.

Maybe Metric should have played it safer.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1pCOR9Rv9M Might have been easier to pull off and would have sounded better. Guess they wanted to rock out though....why not go with Monster Hospital or Combat Baby? Maybe it was too cold to sound good? If you are going Canadian Indie route for the Heritage Classic I would have been ok with RAA or Corb Lund. His music might have worked better and been fun.....then again 90% of the crowd still wouldn't know any of the lyrics or songs so you are stuck with the situation that didn't really work. Looking around the crowd I think that Nickelback would have worked better. Some of the top Indie bands in the country are from Montreal but they still wouldn't have worked yesterday imo. Nothing worse than musical taste being forced upon people. For big events like this go with what the majority of people would know and enjoy. I would never buy a Five for fighting album but I didn't mind hearing them yesterday as they did what they do best and having a hockey connetion didn't hurt either...

I didn't think it was very good. I think the singers voice and the tempo of the music wasn't suited to the outside event.

Wow, the indie music crowd in here resembles canucks fans with their "we're the best cause we're so different, Nickelback sucks, everyone knows that" lines.
You people might as well be plugging your ears and repeating the same thing over again. Sort of like most people at the stadium were plugging their ears in the 2nd intermission at the game. Everyone around me was commenting along the lines of "wtf?" and no one was getting excited and into it from what I could see. Doesn't make that a right or wrong opinion - but it's a fact that not too many people were excited about it.
Look - you hate Nickelback because they are so popular, and they don't "evolve" as a band. Doesn't change the fact that they are the most popular. It's like hating on the Habs because of all their Cups - doesn't change the fact that they've still won 24 of them. And no, I'm not a Habs fan by any stretch.
I have a music degree and a performer's diploma as well. I'd never heard of Metric before yesterday - mostly because I don't listen to indie music. And yesterday reminded me of why I never do. Emily Haines had a terrible singing performance, just awful. The music was depressing instead of upbeat - NHL would have been far better off hiring Nickelback or other recycled stuff we've all heard before - at least they would have pumped the crowd up.
Seems the organizers tried too hard to be different.
Seems some people in this thread are trying too hard to be different as well.

Is it a rule of every thread about music on this site to devolve into a debate over how awful Nickleback is?
If so, LOVE IT. Personally I'm not a fan of Nickleback's newer stuff (post 2005). They were soo much better before they sold out. Now Theory of a Bad Mustash, that's an AMAZING BAND. Like Nickleback, but like, 100x better.

If Metric makes you depressed you're probably actually depressed. It thought it was an upbeat set.

Wow, the arrogance and superiority complex's of some people in here based on their musical tastes is downright disgusting.

I don't know which sections the people who weren't into it were sitting in. On TV it looked like a good chunk of fans were dancing along with the music.

It means he wasted a bunch of time in school. Because if he actually used it for something, he'd be telling us how he's a professional musician or teaches music or something.
