It's still 4 pieces of rubber on glare ice. Don't see how 4x4 is any different really. Perhaps getting unstuck or not stuck at all in the first place, but if you are driving on ice, it's ice and rubber. 4x4 or not.
Except that you have power to all 4 wheels instead of having power to two wheels.
Turning on ice is a lot easier in a 4x4 as well since you have all 4 wheels using power.
If you were driving on a icy Deerfoot with your family are you telling me you'd feel as safe in a 2wd than you would in a 4x4? Stopping I agree it makes no difference at all, but while actually driving on ice you better believe it makes a difference. All 4 wheels having power is way better than having 2 wheels with power.
Yeah, I don't buy that at all either. I've gunned it on green lights and not once have I fish tailed.
I don't even understand most of people's driving problems in the winter since I've driven 4x4 almost ever since I started driving 11 years ago. It feels just like driving on concrete when I put the 4x4 on.

I have a 4x4 also. Gunning your tires on snow and black ice isn't going to give your back end much traction. Especially if it's a truck with zero weight in the backend.

Then you haven't actually "gunned it". That or your vehicle has no power.
From 4X4abc basics:
I am assuming that you want 4WD/AWD for safety on snow and ice. 4WD/AWD systems provide some but not much added safety! Only the convenience, that you don't have spinning tires when starting - or the convenience to get started where a 2WD would not be able to get going. Or the convenience to get up a snowy pass without spinning tires or without mounting chains. However, once moving the physics for all vehicles are equal. 1WD, 2WD, 4WD, 6WD etc.
All motor vehicles need traction for safe steering - 4WD/AWD does not provide extra traction for steering.
All cars need traction for safe braking - 4WD/AWD does not provide extra traction for braking.
Is this right information right? I don't know. Makes sense to me...
I guess this shows how much of an amazing driver you must be. As every driving thread ever on this forum turns into how great of a driver everyone is. I'm sure I've sucked into that conversation a few times myself as well.. lol.

Sure, it helps, but really, its still 4 rubber tires on ice. You could easily lose control and like you said, you still can`t stop as you normally would.
I`ve seen idiots on glare ice in 4x4`s tailgating and just driving like morons because they think they have all the control they need. They don`t.
Global Calgary weather chick just said Calgary was the coldest place in Canada today Just like that rumor Calgary was the second coldest place on Earth a couple months ago... -31 at my place this morning

Call me a liar if you want - I don't really care.
I did, and I really don't care

I remember seeing that picture a while ago. Antarctica #1, Calgary #2, Edmonton #3
You say that now... but you have no idea how miserable -20 is.
The sun is nice, but I personally like rain and wouldnt mind your weather.
Well, your first point is wrong. I just need to dig out the old video of me being interviewed at Paskapoo by CFAC on Boxing Day 1983 where they were checking out the nuts out skiing over a fiercely cold Christmas.
I also used to be a Fortress Mountain stalwart - anyone sitting on those lifts in the wind knows what cold is.
Give me cold sunshine over crappy rain (it is now raining and 3c) any day.
its really coming down out there, could be a long drive home tonight
Not for me, living out in the country, commuting in my 4X4 Durango . . . . that is, unless some of those crappy two-wheel drive weenies get in the way and slow me down.
