Just drove home from Calgary. There was a light dusting on the road but nothing major.

Totally agree, I don't care if it snows (well, the driving sucks but I can take that), it's when it gets to -30 in the morning and I have to walk to school. By the time I am in the school I can't feel my toes and my ears are frozen.
After reading break it is going to SUCK having to wake up at 6:30 and drive to school. What fun!

I hate walking the dog when the windchill is brutal. Dog hates going for a walk, too.

Put a tuque on, kid! I still remember being in elementary school when we were too cool to wear proper winter clothes. -30? Nah, no head gear required. Now, I couldn't care less if I look like the abominable snowman, I'm dressing as warm as I can.

You say that now... but you have no idea how miserable -20 is.
The sun is nice, but I personally like rain and wouldnt mind your weather.

Having moved here to Calgary from England I can tell you that no matter how cold it gets here I would take Calgary weather any day over the relentlessly wet, miserable, grey weather in England.

Nice walking and making fresh tracks in benign temperatures with Ruby yesterday, west of Bragg Creek.
But a little more blustery a few weeks ago on the shores of Chain Lakes . . .
I was heading out for a run on the country roads around Turner Valley this morning and found it was about minus 22 C . . . . and a cougar had chased some kids in town the day before!! I'll wait for it to warm up a bit and go back.
Old farm wives are telling me this is one of the harder winters they've experienced around here. Fortunately, Hawaii beckons in a week.

She should be thrown in jail if she was chasing kids. That's just an unacceptable double standard we seem to be forced to live by in society.

I stayed at my parents house in Strathmore last night because the highway was brutal. This morning there were nine vehicles in the ditch between there and Chestermere, six of which had rolled. All of them were either pickups or SUVs. 4x4 is safer, my ass.

They are safer IMO, the problem is the drivers who don't drive to conditions. 4x4 doesn't mean you can drive like it's summer.

No one should have been on the highway last night, but people thought they could because they had 4WD. Four wheels skidding on black ice is just as bad as two.

Reminds of a winter day a few years ago. I was sitting at a set of lights and a couple of 4x4 trucks thought they were going to show the rest of us what great traction they had. Both booted off the line and thier back ends fish tailed into each other.

Definitely going off on a tangent, but I always felt after driving 4x4 that it gives you a false sense of confidence with winter driving. I drive a FWD car personally and occasionally a 4x4 at work, and I can definitely see how people who drive them all the time feel that they'd be invincible and aren't at any risk.

4x4 is a lot safer than 2wd I'll tell you that. Yes the jackasses who think they're god while driving a 4x4 are actually more dangerous, but so are the jackasses who drive like an idiot in 2wd.
When both driven safely 4x4 is safer than 2wd no question about it. Anyone who thinks otherwise is only fooling themselves.

It's still 4 pieces of rubber on glare ice. Don't see how 4x4 is any different really. Perhaps getting unstuck or not stuck at all in the first place, but if you are driving on ice, it's ice and rubber. 4x4 or not.

I have always felt that 2 wheel drive with winter tires undoubtedly beats 4x4 with "all seasons". That being said, if driven correctly, a 4x4 with winter tires would trump all. As with most driving-related things, it all comes down to the driver, and I think that overconfidence and/or a false sense of security is why we see so many SUVs and pick-ups in the ditch in bad weather.
