Yeah, Colton would be a cap dump as much as a player in a Kadri deal. His contract expires in 2027, so not much chance he'd be blocking a Flames prospect at C. I don't mind this idea.

1st, 2nd, Colton and I'm good with that.
Avs are only adding 3 mil in cap hit with that deal so they wouldn't need the flames to eat money, even though they'd probably want them to

It’s always been the last season that’s been the problem with Kadri (and maybe the second to last with Colorado wanting to resign Makar). Too old, too much salary at that age.
That’s why the retention has been so sticky.

COL is a lock to win the division, so their 1st is in the 28-32 range, and a good chance it's more like 32.
That and Colton isn't close to enough, would need to be a pretty decent prospect to make it make sense

It would leave the Flames' last retention slot wide open to use on Coleman, and that could be a very good return indeed. Conroy's task here is to maximize the combined return on both trades. He can take a little less on one if it means getting substantially more on the other.

I’m not expecting much more that for Kadri but hopefully I’m wrong

He's like smaller but Rossier Joe Colborne.
Honestly, he is a half decent 3rd line center having a poor year. He could be a distressed asset that could be pumped and dumped next season.

If it is a buyers market, a 1st for Kadri would be good.

Would be great to just hedge the bet on them winning the cup as part of a trade option.
Option A (no salary retention on Kadri):
Flames receive 2027 1st + Colton + 2027 3rd
Option B (20% salary retention on Kadri):
Flames receive 2027 1st + Colton + 2027 2nd
Option C (50% salary retention on Kadri):
Flames receive 2027 1st + Colton + 2nd + conditional 2028 2nd (becomes a 1st if Colorado wins the cup in next 2 years).

Avs have 2 2nd rounders in 2027, get one of those with the 2027 1st and Colton and start the car. Maybe try to negotiate Gulyayev (instead of 2nd) he has lost some shine in Colorado.

Understandable, but I don't think it's a massive risk - a buyout saves you 5 million dollars in cap space almost, and you only have a cap hit of 2.33 for 2 years. It's not terrible.
And there's every chance he's still a very useful player at that age anyway. He heads into that final year of the deal in like 28-30 months, we're not talking about it being a decade from now.
Most of the Avs core beyond Makar is 30-34. Their window is the next couple years.
Anyway I'm hoping he is dealt. It's less about getting another very late 1st and more about what it will do for the flames own pick. He is very clearly the best forward on the team right now and the flames will probably be a couple draft slots higher without him the next two years which is worth a ton at the top of the draft.

Colton is a solid 30-40 point C with cup experience. He could return additional picks in a trade next season

I feel like the no retention deal is pretty close but I think retention on Kadri has to be worth a lot more... @ 50% - if you're keeping 3.5 mil a year for over 3 seasons, that is worth at least a 1st by itself. That is a ton of money to eat and you're then trading a pretty top 2nd line center on 3.5 mil a year which is an absolute steal contract value wise.

Yup, Colton is serviceable. His contract is a little high but could get a pick at next year’s trade deadline with retention.

The 1st would have to be 2027, so at least there's a chance that they don't win the division next year.

I was pretty sure COL traded their 1st 3 picks this year. So we're likely talking 27', or 28'.

Not a bad chance at that, since the Wild will be playing the full season with Hughes.

This is correct.
The Avalanche draft pick chart on Puckpedia looks really weird. This year they have no 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but two 4ths, three 5ths, and four (!) 7ths. They must be planning to open a junk shop.

For what its worth.. Colton has a $4MM salary until 2030.
With the cap going up, Colorado is really only taking on $3MM with Kadri. Even less if retained.
