If Calgary wants to be world class like Regina, Winnipeg and Hamilton, they'd better be ready to kick in some dough for a new CFL arena.

If you read the report to the city from earlier in the year, there really wasn't any opposition from the stakeholders with regards to having a shared-used football stadium/fieldhouse.
I think that no matter what gets done, whether it's CalgaryNext something else, there's a good chance we'll still see the shared-used stadium concept built.
Renovating McMahon to bring it up to today's standards won't be cheap. The price of building one large fieldhouse that can function as Calgary's main stadium will likely not be much more than building the proposed Foothills fieldhouse plus renovating McMahon.

you better watch yourself Flash, or else someone will threaten to move the Stampeders too. I mean how else can they afford to be competitive drawing amongst the bottom 7 teams in attendance? I hear New Brunswick is looking for a team.

Saskatoon would be a better choice. They already have a rivalry with Regina and have been trying to steal their team for years.

Secret briefing books link CalgaryNext and Olympics bid, despite official denials

So far, everyone with the city and CSEC have said the Olympics and CalgaryNext are not linked. The picture shows either something else or a whimsical glimpse of some future 'maybe' if a bunch of planets align.

It's certainly not the actual games that's gross. It's the insane amount of money and debt that comes from hosting the games.

Exactly. The journalist isn't being fair when CSEC made it obvious that CalgaryNEXT could be used for the olympics, which the city has indicated interest in prior to.
But whatever happens, there's going to be a olympic connection to it.

I am pretty anti-CalgaryNEXT but I think this is a pretty misleading story title by CBC.
A artist put an Olympic ring logo on the background of a building to show what could happen with the building.

How have they effed it up? Hmm.
Well, the idea was bad, the timing was off, the numbers were wrong, the presentation was terrible, and most of their most ardent supporters (Calgary sports fans) don't like it and don't want to see it happen.
The "richest most successful men" can make mistakes. They obviously did on this one.

That's pretty crazy to be doing after a $1bil renovation.
|
They wouldn't have to raze the whole building. The plan is to demolish the theatre and move some entrances.
MSG would still host the Rangers/Knicks

and you never will. They keep that stuff pretty quite. It isn't released to the public.
When a team says they lost money, you take it with a grain of salt.
Until a team wants to open their books to the city and prove they are losing money in an old rink (with proper auditing, of course)
The arguments over profits and losses are worthless

Like I have said, if they get close to committing to another market, that will be the only time we will see what fans think that team is worth. Until then everyone is just blustering and bluffing.
|
I will be sad for one day. After that, the team I will hate more than Edmonton will be the Seattle Flames.
Then I will take a break from hockey for one season max - you know, about the same time that the Calgary Cowboys, or the Calgary Killers, or whatever that new NHL franchise is named. Maybe it will be the Calgary Hurricanes. Maybe I will even change my tune and say that I couldn't be happier that we got Lindholm instead of Monahan.
This comes from a fan of the Flames since 1981. The team is free to move on to another location. I will be free to snap my fingers like Beyonce, and start singing the lyrics to Irreplaceable.
Don't for a second believe that I will be alone. Sad to see the Flames leave? For sure. I will get over it though, you can also be sure of that.
