There is a very nice memorial in Central Park on 4th St and 11th Ave SW.. perhaps there should be one like that in Peace park, naming the fallen soldiers that have hailed from Calgary?

I think that is exactly the problem...nothing against Hornburg at all, but why him and why not Nichola Goddard?

I do agree. I knew Nathan and that's why I showed support for someone thinking of him to be honored by a bridge in his name. I think the thing that gets most people is that the name 'Peace Bridge' really isn't enough because:
1) There already is a peace bridge in Canada, among other things that are called 'Peace ______' like the Peace arch
2) Peace is really too generic to really and truly honor our troops, and reeks of trying to come down on all four sides of the issue.
I have no idea why we couldn't have called it 'Calgary Highlander Bridge,' 'Rememberance Bridge,' or something else that specifically honors the troops.
I also realize the fact that we're talking about this instead of the cost shows that Bronco is a brilliant politician.

I think that was more of a NIMBY thing as opposed to being against spending money on transit. What the biggest opponents of the original alignment wanted would have cost much more and provided much less function, all to keep an 'unsightly C-Train line' out of view from their
property.

Hmm.
I leave mine in the alley all the time. I even built up a compacted gravel sub-base and curb for it and the rumored 'brown bin' that'll be coming within two years. I think they look progressive, although I live a mortar-round away from Forrest Lawn, where getting the car off it's blocks on the front lawn is progressive.
On this topic: More inner-city bridge development!
Plus get me a 17th Ave SE/Foothills Industrial C-train line. I think a lot of Calgary's working poor would make excellent use of such a line...while getting in on the subsidization train.

Especially in Calgary. It's a throwback to the no-debt, fiscal conservative culture. This was fostered by the agrarian roots of the province and the mass evictions from the land in the 1930s where indebted farmers lost everything.
Basically, at the heart we're all country bumpkins and philistines.

As I said before, I think the "Peace Bridge" name is pretty blah. As others have already said, we already have a very well know Peace Bridge in Canada.
IMO, a much better name would have been "Freedom Bridge"
That is what our soldiers over in Afghanistan are fighting for and what all our soldiers in past conflicts have fought for.
Besides, the name "Freedom Bridge" would have a connection with Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, of which Canada is a participant.

I think that the name should be "Red Herring" because people are up in arms about a mere 22 million when there are much larger expenditures that actually impact the municipal and city budgets, but instead were talking about this and what it should be called!

How much is the new ring road going to cost? Should that money be put to better purposes? Who will benefit?

"Freedom Bridge" would sound too BS Nouveau American Patriotism for me. Canada has a long standing history of peacekeeping missions, much longer than this current tour in Afghanistan.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
I looked but not once did I see the word Peace in our national anthem. I did however see the word Free. Not once, but twice.

I bitch loudly on things that I don't want like all overpasses to new areas but welcome things I can use.

But for everything that you don't bitch about, there is someone else to bitch about it. So in effect, all taxpayers at some point in time are bitching. Thereby my point is correct. Taxpayers, not necessarily all of them at the same time, will bitch about EVERYTHING the city does.

When I become mayor. I'll have that bridge demolished and melted down to make rebar for a new overpass in my neighbourhood.
