Well I really don't think the name sucks... I was exaggerating. However I do think they could have come up with something a lot better.

By the way, what is with the last minute naming of the bridge and the discussion about which name was held in secret?

I have also seen the first renderings, and they are certainly going to add a new element to the Bow River landscape.
I bet it will look good enough to be featured during HNIC, during the intermissions when they show cityscapes. I am proud of the city they show during the national broadcasts, this will be another thing to be proud of.

Good, hope they have fun with that. In the meantime, I'll be crossing the bridge and going places!

Other aldermen mused that Bronconnier's attempt to brand the bridge with a military connection — an idea that the mayor floated publicly on the weekend — was a scheme to quiet the public backlash against the project.

"It certainly does make something that's been perceived by the public as a poor decision or in poor taste more palatable, something that is more likely to be accepted by the general public because of the fact it is tied to the military," said Ald. Andre Chabot.

Ah yes good ol' Chabot, one of the only 2 alderman (Connelly) that voted against the open information motion put forward by Pincott and Ceci today.

If they really wanted it to be a salute to the military, they should name it after one of our soldiers who gave their lives. How about the Cpl. Nathan Hornburg Bridge; or even just the Hornburg Bridge. A Calgary based soldier who died in Afghanistan.

Can someone post the renderings in this thread, or a link to them?

Are they at Skyscraper Forums?

Design hasn't been released yet. Conflicting reports of "this week" and "August 6th"

I used to go to high school and play football with him. It would have been great if they named it after him. He was one of the great Calgarians who paid the ultimate price, we are forever indebted to him and all others who have served.

It is a difficult task to single out one particular soldier to honour by naming ths bridge.

There is a very nice memorial in Central Park on 4th St and 11th Ave SW.. perhaps there should be one like that in Peace park, naming the fallen soldiers that have hailed from Calgary?

Additionally in the normal cold months the traffic probably dwarfs on the pedestrian bridges while staying constant on the overpasses.

Seriously there is no real "need" for the bridge. There is no "bridge congestion" or.... I don't even know what to call it.

I'm not totally against the bridge. I'm too interested in myself/real problems to really care all that much... But there are enough pedestrian bridges I run/bike them often and never wish there were more.

We do have that wall with the fallen soliders names in Garrison Woods. So I guess it would be kind of redundant?

Then again I would prefer something like that in a more central location such as where this bridge will be located.

In all honestly, I think the Zoo bridge which will be replaced (via a design competition) is probably more necessary.

He was the nicest guy. It would be fitting if they did go with that name.
