Few updates:
Calgary has had multiple talks with Buffalo regarding JJ Peterka.
This is a guy who put up 70pts on a TERRIBLE team, with a strong supporting cast and ample PP time I personally think this kid will be a stud.
Yes another winger, but Calgary would likely move one in any trade for JJ.
Carolina keeping a close eye on the Rasmus situation in Calgary, I expect them to make a bid/pitch for likely the 2nd best Defenseman available right now.

I think they'll end up prioritizing Bennett and Marchand.

Carolina certainly had the picks to make a pitch on Andersson.

He’s a 6’3” center who could be a good candidate to replace Backlund when and if he departs.
Obviously, I would still prefer Lundell, as Luostarinen is turning 27 in September, and Lundell is only 23.
|
I thought Luostarinen would be a good fit on the Flames, even before he blew up these playoffs. The fact he can play centre is key. Slot him in at #3C and you’ve got a big, physical two-way matchup guy for the long term.
I don’t think there’s any chance FLA move Lundell. An elite two-way shutdown C, just starting to enter his prime, who has shows he’s more than capable of playing #2C, signed long-term at $5m, is just too valuable to let go.
The Panthers are looking to take more runs at the Cup over the next couple seasons. They’re not going to make moves that make their roster worse. And Luostarinen has a very manageable $3 mil cap hit for the next two seasons.
Andersson would be a good fit with FLA if they let Ekblad walk. So there’s the basis of a deal there in the short term. But can FLA fit in Andersson’s next deal after this season? Maybe Luostarinen at $3 mil is more valuable to them than Andersson at $7.5.

Going to be very interesting.

Jones is going nowhere, they traded a first and Knight for him, so he was obviously a sought after target for them.

My guess:
Bennet signs a new deal - 8 x 7.5 is close enough to 7 x 9.5 that there’s no reason for him to leave.
Ekblad walks - He’s looking for a big payday and FLA value him at $6 mil.
Marchand walks - He’s looking to hit the biggest payday possible, and someone will give him 3 x 8.
Schmidt signs a new deal - He’s found a great fit and it won’t take much to sign him.
FLA will have enough cap space to bring in an RD replacement for Ekblad, either in trade or UFA.

They could fit Andersson after next year, Bob's 10M comes off the books and although I don't see him going anywhere he's going to take a discount plus the cap will go up again.

And Jones is making 7 million in Florida. It's a solid deal for a guy who was probably their best all-around defenseman in the playoffs.

I can see Florida offering Marchand something like 6 million for five years and then just LTIR him at the end or bite the bullet. Six million isn't going to matter much when the cap goes to 130M.
If Ekblad walks then they will need to find a replacement, that's why I think Andersson would be a great fit.

Who is moved to make this happen ?
They currently have 19 million in cap space.
Bennett will take up 8 million, Ekblad likely similar.
They would then have 3 million to sign 2 forwards, 1 d-man and a backup. The math isn't mathing really and that's with both Bennett and Ekblad signing somewhat team friendly deals.

I would be stoked to land Peterka. The primary need is a 1C, but with Peterka and Coronato I think we would have our 1/2 RW positions locked for a long time.

That would be a great get, and I'm sure he would cost an arm and a leg.
Do the Flames consider Zary as a winger for next season?

Peterka would be an amazing addition.
As Royle said, 70pts on a terrible team. Would very likely be the Flames top winger.
I have no idea why Buffalo would move on from him, but if they are I hope Conroy's all over this. The rumblings about him being an issue in the room or whatever are potentially moreso because I bet that room is full of negative attitudes... you're in Buffalo, team's consistently mismanaged players, can't make the playoffs, I bet everyone in there's grumpy. Change of scenery could do wonders.

I wonder if one of the reasons why we haven't seen Zary/Frost/Bahl signings is due to them possibly being in some trade talks?
Buffalo has JJ Peterka and Bowen Byram, both are absolute fits for Conroy's targeted age range and you have to give to get, and rumours have Buffalo as not wanting deals around futures.

Fla can, this off season will be the only year they struggle with the cap. I think the cap will be $103+ next year. Bob is off the books and I could see him staying short term for way less. Marchand is going to stay, for less. Bennett took less and their core all have great contracts.
I think they could keep Ekblad if he takes less too. If he wants money, he will be gone but I could see them squeezing him around the same deal he has.
But if he goes, Rasmus 50% RS, they are moving forward for years with a great team.
Problem with Fla is they don't have assets like Carolina does

I doubt Bahl, but I do believe this is the case with Zary.
Zary was tracking to be in the same range as Coronato until he got hurt. I think it was Royle who said, Flames had a long-term contract for Zary but back tracked to a bridge after the injury. I can see Zary and his agent thinking that Zary is worth close to Coronato. If that is the case, I could see Zary being traded.
Buffalo values players like Zary. I think he would sign there too as young players want to play over playing somewhere nice or even on a deep winning teams. Playing and earning your money always comes first.
Buffalo could add Zary in a Peterka deal and maybe the Flames have to add a fair amount and maybe Buffalo does well in the deal
I also see Buffalo as good trade partners with the Flames as we don't want to trade picks, and they don't want picks and we have lots of quality player who do not have a NTC.

What would you move for Peterka? Zary and 32nd OA?

Not a huge fan of going after Peterka as a left shot winger is not what I want the flames to prioritize. Rather have Rossi than Peterka.
Similar to some of the other sentient I do wonder if Zary, Bahl, Frost are guys the team would consider packaging to get a bigger piece?
