Can't tell if Frank is arguing in bad faith or if he's genuinely naive. At one point basically claims that Ellen Hughes is being asked to critique her sons because they said they were proud to be American rather than because they laughed along with an obviously sexist joke directed at her gold medal winning team. Can't imagine they go anywhere near this on any other shows.

While on the topic, full credit where it's due to Jeremy Swayman for his comments on the whole thing today: “We should have reacted differently... We know that we are so excited for the women’s team. We have so much respect for the women’s team. To share that gold medal with them is something we’re forever grateful for.”

Really shines a light on how either out of touch or stupid some of these other players are not to have come out and just said something similar from the jump.

One thing I wish the hosts would have responded was his assertion that it would be fine if some other FBI director was chugging beers or the president brought them to The State of The Union wouldn't be weird. It would be. Thats not what that person's role is, that's not what that event is for. If Biden's director of the FBI was celebrating with NBA champions people would wonder wtf is going on. The State of the Union is the president's speech and is a POLITICAL thing. By showing up YOU ARE THE POLITICAL ONE. By abstaining, as the women did, they are being exactly NOT POLITICAL. The White House having a medal ceremony or something, that would be different. Still lame to show up to in my personal view, but not necessarily a political thing.

They also could have focused on, Trump calling their teammates losers. They are members of Team USA, not the USA hockey team. Calling another athlete a loser is calling their teammate and loser and they stand behind him.

1) None of these things would be happening under another president/administration, even former republican ones would've had a higher baseline of etiquette and professionalism

2) If for some asinine reason another president's FBI director was doing as Patel did on taxpayer dollars, it would 100% be called out (such an odd rebuttal to hammer on that misses the point entirely)

3) Why is Trump seldom if never held to the same standard? He said demeaning things towards America's own athletes. So where is Frank's tweet about that? How is that not picked up on a problematic to him given his impassioned speech about athletes being able to enjoy their moment on the world stage as they please.

4) People reacting to socially regressive commentary made by a US president isn't the problem. And if frank believes it is, then he's inadvertently stating he doesn't believe trump's Olympic commentary is an issue worthy of pushback. Therefore his comment about trump's joke being "disgusting" must be bs, or empty words, because every one he's criticized were just saying the exact same thing.

The problem with folks in frank's corner is they contradict their own logic by essentially muting their own alleged values and principles anytime that violation comes from Trump or his subordinates. Just makes them look oblivious because they can't see their own obvious double standard.

Not saying it's not important discussion to have but its also grim how low the standard has slipped that media and players are having to engage in these discussions because it's just generally accepted that of course the President is going to say something overtly sexist without recourse and it's how people react to that that's the main thing to be addressed.

I guess people’s opinions can certainly change and it has been almost 15 years since Thomas said no. I wish the Vancouver hosts called him out on that

They were trying to have an actual discussion with Frank on this and not inflame him. You could tell they were getting frustrated with Frank but stayed on point and tried to get an answer from Frank on this topic. Pointing out he's a giant hypocrite, while cathartic for us, ends the conversation on the spot.

If these goofs are never called out or confronted on said hypocrisy then they go on thinking their faulty logic around these issues is totally reasonable and doesn't need to be examined further.
