Jesus, CP can be unbelievable. Tragedy for the bear? get a grip. Guess what, humans have every right to enjoy the spaces where grizzlies co exist. Co-exist is the key here people. I have seen 9 grizzly since September 1st. That's 9 individual bears. 4 of which encountered at less then 60 yards. I watched in close proximity (unwillingly) as a large boar killed and consumed a moose calf. There are far greater grizzly numbers in this province then bios acknowledge. There is a generation of bears now that have zero fear of humans, hunting seasons closed more then 10 years ago. Grizzly populations are getting dangerously large in human interface areas. This is going to be a much more common occurrence.

So then we properly control the population with licensed hunting tickets, not idiots with an elephant gun hiking. There are means to do things properly, arming hikers is not one of them. Silvers whole rant about chickens and cows and where your meat comes from missed the mark entirely.

Roughly 4.7 million people live in Alberta.

Roughly 900 grizzly bears live in Alberta.

While the loss of a couple people IS saddening, the loss of a grizzly is a significant concern, ecologically speaking.

Some of us seem to realize that biodiversity is a required element to life on this planet.

That’s a big factor, having seen a bear(black) that has been sprayed come back into came less than ten minutes later it’s not what I’d use as my last defense.

Again as I have said a big factor is your training and ability with the protection you choose. I carry a rifle or shotgun and have bear spray on my bino harness. If I run into a predatory bear or feel like my life is in danger it’s the firearm I’ll reach for. If It’s a curious bear and it doesn’t bugger off like most do then it’ll get the spray but most situations neither either needed
Feel free to provide research into the assumptions you are making.

Where I think you may be correct is a person who trains for bear encounters regularly with a firearm and has a learned procedure to follow would have better outcomes with firearms then the random person with a firearm. Whether this would be superior to bear spray is unknown.

But in the general case of the average hunter or backcountry user they should plan on carrying and using bear spray.

So a cull. I suggested that and then these guys started flapping around in circles bellowing about me being "ludicrous," "dumb" and filling the thread with "nonsense."

But yes, there are a fk-ton of bears in the parks - populations once controlled by indigenous communities and settlers - but now we can't kill them because their fuzzy ears remind people of their Teddy Bears so their populations are artificially high and competing for limited resources, hence so many run-ins with humans this year.

A cull is coming. There are too many bears with populations kept high because the boo-hoo brigade thinks they're sacred or some other such nonsense.

Never forget...any dead bear is a TrAgEdY.

Just curious if you have facts or stats on this? Not saying it isn't true, I just assume pretty much all large animals had much higher populations in the past.

Grizzly Bears are endangered. Humans are not (not yet, anyway).

If I'm looking objectively at which species has negatively affected my life more, it's humans hands down. They don't get a free pass from me just because we are the same species.

I'm not celebrating anyone's death, but I also cannot be bothered to sweat the loss of 2 people out of 8 billion. I also don't celebrate the killing of a bear that is dangerous to humans despite understanding the necessity, but every grizzly lost is a bigger problem than every human lost.

As Locke said earlier, this is a lose/lose situation. If people are advocating for bears it's because they can't advocate for themselves, that's all.

Both of these strategies would have resulted in the wolf leaving somewhat satisfied for its efforts.

For the record, I carry Bear spray, one on bino harness, one in pack, because I absolutely can confirm a bear will return after a canister is already discharged. When available, My group also carries a shotgun with slugs or a 45/70 lever action on a quick release harness. Ive had 2 charges this year alone, one I sprayed, the other turned. I have never seen this level of aggression from Grizzlies as much as this year.

Horrible comments cali, That bears loved ones wont be missing it. Those peoples will. Imagine if someone said similar comments to what you just said in the covid thread.

Bears used to roam the prairies from Alberta to Manitoba. They've retreated to the mountains because we've pushed them out of their space. We have eliminated 98% of their range while we continue to demand more and more space leaving them less. Grizzly populations are not at an artificially high population in any way, WTF are you talking about.

edit: numbers were wrong googled too quickly. either way, a cull would be entirely inappropriate as they're still considered a threatened species in Alberta.

Google does say there are 55,000 grizzlies in north America. But your points do stand.

100% false information. Right now there are more then 60K grizzlies in north america.
Remember, A Brown Bear is a coastal grizzly bear. 100% the same species.

Your main point stands but there are roughly 25-30,000 grizzlies in Canada and 60,000 in North America. And these numbers could be on the low end as they tent to be elusive.

Keep in mind, A large male grizzly with have a huge territorial range 1500sq kms, where it will hunt and kill bears inside that range. Grizzlies bears require a hell of a lot of space.
