Toffoli is the perfect guy to trade now. At his age, coming off a career season. Signing him right now at his peak value strikes me as a big mistake.

Zary looked terrific at camp last year. AHL playoffs aside, I'm betting he pushes for a spot as well.

I think Zary starting with the Flames next year will be determined by the off season moves

Assuming Duehr already made the team by virtue of his new deal, and also assuming Ruzicka is on the roster in some fashion, my thoughts are that we will see, in order of likelihood: Coronato, Wolf, Pelletier, Zary, Phillips (if he signs)

And you replace his scoring with what? The guy wants to be here, he is going to be good value for his production, and if the mandate is try and win now there is nobody on the UFA market that is going to be a better fit.

How was Rozie under Mitch Love tutelage? Because that's an answer that solves the riddle of a center replacement of almost any kind given how well he played when in the top 6.

Played all of 18 games under him. Was held out of the lineup for undisclosed reasons during the 2022 WCF series against Chicago.

I feel like this upcoming camp / season will be a huge one for Ruzicka. Lets hope he puts it all together, because a big center with good hands and decent skating is something we need.

backlund/toffoli are too old to give extensions to. and Toffoli is coming off a career year for points so will be north of $5-6MM for probably 5 years at least. Flames cant keep him till he's 36+

holding onto Toffoli also doesn't really open up a roster spot as the RW now has

Toffoli/Coronato/Coleman/Duehr

Honestly I would be ok with all 3 of Backlund/Toffoli/Tanev all being traded by the draft.

You are assuming 8 year extensions or something. Backs will be offered 3-4, and probably not much of a raise if anything. I think Lindholm is harder to sign. And what he comes to the Flames with (if he even does) determines whether you work to extend Backlund.

I do think it's not a bad time to cut Toffoli loose and get a haul for him from a team that can and will use him well. Maybe LA.

I'm assuming 3 - 3+ for Backlund/Tanev and 5+ for Toffoli

I like all 3 but there on the wrong side of 30's to re-sign.

Toffoli, Tanev and Backlund are the 3 I can see moving on especially since he name dropped Lindholm as someone you want to keep.

That opens up 3 roster spots for guys to take, and the reality is we probably don't have much of a choice or they just walk and he said that wont happen under him.

Of course he wants Lindholm. He's their best centre. But what does Lindholm want to do, and how much does he want to stay? They might not have a choice. He will want a max deal and he will want a hefty pay raise - into the 8s at least and probably more.

I'll say this about Lindholm, he signed and extremely team friendly deal as an RFA when he came here, heck, as did Hanifin. Both have greatly outperformed their respective contracts.

They both rightfully should be compensated for their efforts. Whether it's here or elsewhere, they earned a nice payday.

You're probably right and I'm not comfortable going $9+ million for Lindholm.

What would you have said about Duehr at this time last season though? or even early this year.

not sure what your take was but Darryl calling up Duehr was a running joke in October...turns out he was the best NHLer of the bunch this year.

If we give him 9 to shorten the deal that would be the sweet spot these 8 year deals are killers unless its a 22 year old you are signing.
