and..... the city already accepted one arena proposal. It's not like they taken a hard line stance against it. Next mayor negotiates a proposal that is worse for the city and it gets wrapped up.

I'm not worried about the arena not being built. Both sides want the thing, it's just posturing at this point IMO, and hammering out the finer details. All this wasted time, and I bet eventually it will be pretty close to a 50/50 split in terms of costs. It sucks that it's been delayed for so long, but it will eventually happen.

Just look at all the construction happening around that area. It feels like the city is already prepping for it, to be honest.

I think part of the delay is the misplay by CSEC thinking they could get the city to go for Calgary Next and then not pushing it during boom times.

That trumps Calgary, and most other NA cities in potential corporate and retail revenue.

Add to this Atlanta has just put forward a plan for a $2B entertainment district which includes a hockey arena that can be completed in 3years and you can easily see why it's not hard to connect the dots for relocation, whether that's Calgary or Arizona. I don't see why Edwards wouldn't be chomping at the bit to relocate to Atlanta if that deal gets approved. By all accounts he's a cheap bastard, so if someone else is taking the risk and putting up the arena money... why wouldn't he want in on that.
The Oakland A's also just agreed to relocated their team to Vegas basically because of a stadium. Both these facts have definitely provided enough ammo for Edwards and Bettman where any talks of relocation is much more than "talking big".
Yes, I'm sure the league can't wait to move this stable, reliable, rabid hockey fanbase that is Calgary to the twice failed Atlanta market. I'm sure prospective owners are lining up down the block for their chance to lose millions every year. Heck, the Thrashers were losing all kinds of money when the salary cap was only $59M, now it's set to rise closer to $90M by the time the 3rd Atlanta franchise drops the puck. I'm also certain that the other owners would be happy to pick up the tab at the end of the season since there's revenue sharing. Absolutely, rich businessmen aren't risk-adverse at all, they love taking giant financial risks. Yes, Atlanta, here we come again! 3rd time is a charm! Think of all the great headlines and optics and delicious drama that's sure to come the league's way, bet they're just rubbing their hands together for that day.

I don't think MLB wanted them moving again but it dragged on for so long (and with the NHL and NFL already there), that they're fine with it at this point. The site they chose has no room for parking though, and apparently it's only going to seat 30,000.

Also, I have heard that they didn't want to allow any more expansion teams before the Oakland/Tampa Bay stadium situations are resolved.
To wit, an excellent article on what happened with the A's. Many of you will enjoy it.

That is what everyone in Quebec City still thinks.
And they have a billionaire just wanting & waiting there.

A new arena is NOT the be all and end all in getting a franchise. QC and KC both have reasonably new arenas, but no NHL teams. Didn't the Thrashers play in a modern arena? The only reason they are in any rumours is market size for US TV.

If the Flames move the timeline to get a new franchise will be measured in generations, not years.

You're correct but also wrong. The other poster is quite correct to say that the league and people outside AB don't care about Edmonton or Calgary or the BOA. They only care about money. In that regard, Calgary is a market that sells tickets in an outdated arena and the owners are turning a profit, and, making money on the valuation of the team increasing every year. The team won't be moving to Kansas City or Houston if a new arena isn't built in the next 5 years. Anyone who thinks the Flames will move are nuts.

Now I guess, in 10 years time if the Dome is still crumbling and the team isn't making money, maybe then. But I really am exhausted of the narrative that the team is some how in peril.

As a kid I grew up an As fan, it was the Bash Brothers era. I loved that team. I remember crying when Canseco was traded to Texas.

I stayed a fan, but its been tough. Early 2000s was hopeful, but I have given up now. Don’t follow them at all.

I really can’t believe MLB is letting this happen to a franchise like the As. They are fairly storied franchise for the West Coast. All to play ball in 130F day in July indoors.

The Atlanta arena went through an extensive rehab after the hockey team left. It is quite nice.

I’m no arena expert but any NHL or NBA arena that I have been in that were built in the last 30 years seem nice to me. They all feel more or less the same and would do just fine for the Flames.

Why does Climate Pledge arena feel like it has a darker theme is it the lighting or lack of?

The tunnels look like a trip. Pretty neat arena.

Never liked them since I've always been a Seattle fan. But for the owner to use a baseball team as a pawn for a real estate deal is horrible for the fans who love the team.

If you want to pay $12 billion to develop an area, have at it. But if you have only $2 billion and try to use a ballclub to coerce the city/state/province into paying for something, it's shady to me.

Declining attendance and earn CAD against USD expenses. Alternative markets possess more growth potential. Market sticky on willingness to participate in the capital required to build a new building, or other markets possibly willing to do so.

Yes, they can move. For right or wrong it most definitely is a possibility.

My better half works in a news room “Arena deal apparently being announced today, our sources say” was the text I received. Sounds positive at least.
