Well then I guess it was a good career for him.

I would take the under on Phil at $5.5. I can't imagine any team offering up that.

Buyout is ownership dollars where he’s not a main problem. I say for this year just suck it up and keep him. Going forward in todays NHL every single player has to have the ability to skate. Having him on the roster prevents that identity slightly, as he’s the slowest, but others like Toffoli are in the same boat. In a year where I don’t have much confidence anyway, I don’t mind having him around as he’s smarter than most guys and plays hard.

A buyout costs the owners 666,000 dollars as opposed to paying him 1 million. I am sure they are not worried about the money. It just does not save you much cap space this year. When you factor in the replacement player it is probably more cap space to buy him out and sign a replacement player, it would actually cost you cap space.

That's unfair. He is an NHL player... he's not even close to a $5,000,000.00 NHL player but if he was on a $1,000,000.00 ticket every team in the league would want him on their 4th line.

He effectively costs 1 million this year. For a team with cap space they could have him at a low cost. Now I know that the 10 teams that he can be traded to know they have leverage over the Flames, but I doubt they are pounding down Brad’s door trying to get their hands on Lucic (for those ones that have cap space).

Re: Kessel
OK he wasn't useless last season. I knew he potted just 8 but didn't realize he racked up the assists.
I'd hit him with a 2x4 in a month if he's still unsigned then.

Question for you even with the buyout. Is his cap hit at $5M still or that gets wiped off the books after the buyout? I didn’t realize the actual dollars for the buyout is that low. If the $5M is wiped off the books I’d buy him out no question.

No the Flames would have 4.67 million on the cap this year (Oilers would have 667K) and then the Flames would have 293K next year. Chiarelli basically set up a buyout proof contract.

Phil needs to be motivated. It’s just been very unclear which type of coach does that. He’s worked under hard and soft coaches and I’ve always been under the impression he marches to his own drummer regardless. World class talent but plays whenever he chooses. You take the good with the bad but realize you can live with that on the second line on a championship team but accepting that from a first liner isn’t acceptable.

Too many kids. I'd use Monahan there and swap Ruz to 4C. Ruz isn't good at faceoffs yet and you don't want those guys chasing it all the time. I think Pelletier could help reignite Monny.
Remember that Darryl didn't trust Ruzicka at all to play him in the PO's, while Ritchie got 7 games.

I see. Personally I see that as eat it for one season. Live with the guy on the fourth line in a season where they probably won’t win it, but he’s not sinking you.

Real dollars yes... but he costs way more then that in terms of cap dollars. Few teams want a a guy who takes 5M off the cap on the 4th line.

He is probably worth a 4th rounder coming the Flames way in that scenario.

That's fine. You do it for the cap space anyway. If someone wants to take Looch off of our hands for a 4th, jump on that.

Kessel won’t be coming to Calgary.
I’m assuming he’ll retire if he doesn’t find something he wants. Not a Sutter guy and already has cups.

5 years - $10M/season
6 years - $9.8M/season
7 years - $9.5M/season
8 years - $9.3M/season
I really think they shouldn’t go beyond 6 years for Huberdeau, even if they have to pay him a little more money near term. They’re not in the drivers seat here considering they are a desperate bride at the moment. I think it’ll be a quick signing at 8 years within the next two weeks.
|
I doubt Huberdeau takes less than 10M on a 8 year deal. Give him $10.5 on a 8 year deal and start rebuilding in 5 years when the contract starts to look ugly.

Who are you trading to bring in the useless Kessell at a $4M cap hit?
