I don’t know if they need a big center. I would be happy with Brayden Point but I agree Monahan hasn’t filled the role of elite number 1 C but just hated that he was called a bust considering what he has done in terms of goals and points.

I can take the Bennett bust stuff even though he is not a bust in the sense that Yakupov or Juolevi are busts.
Monahan's not overpaid by much, if at all. He makes what guys who score about as much or less (even in this low point for him) routinely make: Look at the salaries of Kreji, RNH, Larkin, Stepan, Schenn, Duchene, RyJo, Stastny, Karlsson, Nelson, Henrique, etc. all $5.8-$6.5 and score around the same level (and in a couple cases way less).

Look at Couture - how would you like $8M for him for 6 more years, with almost no ability to trade him? Or Johansen $8M x 4 more for 18 points this year?

More elite Cs are another story, and make a couple million more, unless they are on short term deals, ELCs or their team signed them cheap before they popped (Zibanejad/Scheifele/Mackinnon/Barkov).

I agree.

Massively ineffective this year. I’d add Anderson.

Watching GioforPM jump through fantasy hoops to defend Sean Monahan is always entertaining.
He hadn't changed his game, he hasn't been focused on the 200 foot game any more than ever and if he is he is falling at that too.

It's very similar to reading some peoples posts about the intentions of Johnny Gaudreau after this current contract.

This organization somehow manages to find these elite franchise wingers and they think that’s enough. We’ll just build around this one guy and bring forth these expensive, overpaid complimentary or secondary pieces like Brouwer and Neal or Jay Bouwmeester or a second rate center like Olli Jokinen and now the Flames are ready to contend. Only for this team to fall completely flat on their face and disappoint their fanbases time and time again.
Ain't this the damn truth. Organization still hasn't learned after Iggy in complimenting your impact player with another impact player.

I hope that for the next round at trying to build a contender, the GM is much more focused on acquiring top end talent to carry the team, and then worry about the depth afterwards. Depth is much easier to acquire and fit in to the teams salary cap, rather than having too many bottom lines players trying to outplay their capability when the best players on the roster aren't good enough to do so.

Let the depth be players that come up through the system, cheap UFA signings, and shrewd trades. There needs to be much more focus on internal building, rather than through external means.

In the last 10 years or so, the list is surprisingly short, and it's for the most part the truly elite who have done so.

Johnny came very close, but hasn't sniffed it since.

The odds of him doing it once traded are likely pretty long, even with elite line mates.
He got screwed with a bs goaltender interference call but really 99 is close enough.

That was the last full season of NHL hockey not a decade ago or something.

More offensive team plus better line mates could get him back in that range imo

Yes, because comparing salaries of other centres who (a) make the same and (b) produce the same is “jumping though hoops”. I don ‘t mind criticism. I dislike inaccurate or hyperbolic criticism.

I guess Sutter is jumping through the very same hoops, since he says exactly the same things.

Poor defensive coverage from Mag on their winning goal.

Plenty of blame to go around on that one. Gio and Tanev had unusually bad plays. Monahan failed to prevent a pass out. Gaudreau was late getting back into the play. Mangiapane missed his guy.
