Good point. But can they trade his rights before matching so as to allow the team trading for him to match? Same difference, if so.

They would not need to do any of that. The Oilers can pay Nurse now and be temporarily over the cap until starting rosters are submitted at the beginning of October. They could then move a player or two to Bakersfield to be cap compliant, and then recall them once Sekara's LTIR is activated.

I believe when a player signs an offer sheet he can't be traded and his current team has 7 days to match or decline. Oilers would have essentially 7 days to trade a few players off their roster to make room dealing with GM's that know well they are in a position of strength as the clock ticks for the Oilers. It would be an incredibly difficult time for the Oilers as they would likely be forced to trade a player or more for below market value to make up space weakening their roster in the process.

Doesn't Nurse have enough upside to offer him a long-term deal, let's say, something like 6 years and 5.5 million? That would make things a lot more harder for the Oilers.

Then you have to give up a 1st and a 3rd though. Is Nurse worth that, and the money, and being stuck with Nurse for 6 years?

Here's the dream
At the start of training camp, Nurse still holds out, his agent goes public with the now historical "It will be a cold day in hell before my client signs for anything less then $7 million bucks long term of $5.5 on a bridge deal of 2 years, he then proceeds to drop the mic
Lucic turns up at training camp fatter and slower then ever "No seriously coach I drank these weight loss shakes every day" T-Mac educates him that in no way are shakes from McDonalds weight loss shakes, and then tells him to waddle his 450 lb butt to the Sauna, this is the last we see of Lucic until April.
Ty Rattie completely fails on McDavids wing. Pool Party moves up to the first line and McDavid ricochets 30 goals off of him.
In November, the Oilers announce a new deal for Nurse at 6 million bucks for 1 year "F them" Nurse stated in an inteview "They saw how much their blueline sucked without the Nurse" From now on Nurse refers to himself in the third person.
RNH is traded for a second round draft pick, a box of crusty donuts and a prospect from Lower East Mongolia who posted a video of himself on youtube doing fancy tricks with a stick and a tennis ball.
The season ends, Lucic is found crawling across the dressing room weighing 138 pounds after being locked in the Sauna for the past 8 months. He talks about a terrible hallucination where he was playing for the Oilers. When he finds out its true he crawls back into the Sauna and locks the doors . . . from the inside
McDavid comes out with his agent, his parents and his spiritual advisor on a special 2 hour hockey night in Canada tersely called "The Wrath of Con .. . nor". At the end of his special he looks at the camera and demands that his talent be sent to Arizona
Draisaitl announces his retirement so he can pursue his love of acting and burgers. He secures a part in a remake of Hogan's heros, he also announces that hes purchased a Hulkaburger franchise.
Poolparty's agent comes out and states that his client is every bit as good as Connor McDavid the exceptional Arizona Coyotes Center, and as the new face of the Oilers His client demands the same pay as McDavid, he then thumps Poolparty on the shoulder and murmers "Lets Go". When new GM Keven Lowe demands to know why his client is worth that much, Poolparty's agent pulls a tennis ball out of his pocket and replies that he's holding a thermal detonator.

Yeah, that is where I think other teams would hesitate on an offer sheet. One has to REALLY like a player to go through the process, and while Nurse played in the Oilers top-four last year I think there is lots to suggest that he would be a third-pairing defenseman on a lot of NHL teams. How much is that worth?

Well he is a former 7th overall pick so.
I mean for a team that needs defense, I think it makes sense. And if you're a team on the bubble or playoff team that 1st wouldn't be high.
I haven't watched Nurse much though but I'm assuming he's a top 4 guy at minimum.

He is a top-four guy on the Oilers. I wouldn't put much faith into how he would perform for another team.

The LTIR will only work if when Sekara returns, both he and Nurse can fit in under the cap. With Sekara out, if the Oilers sign Nurse for $4M, they will be (slightly) into LTIR. There will be no cap space to carry forward. If Sekara returns later this season, with both he and Nurse on the roster, one or two players will have to be sent down at that time and exchanged for players signed for the league minimum in order for the Oilers to remain cap compliant.
It is a good point that if an offer sheet is made for around $5.5M, there is no way whatsoever for the Oilers to be cap compliant unless they can demonstrate that Sekara will be out for the season, and even then, they can only sign Nurse for a maximum of one season.
One thing I'm not sure about is whether the Oilers can go into LTIR during the regular season with the intention of trading some salary away prior to Sekara's return. Does there have to be a guarantee of future cap compliance prior to signing a contract that puts a team into LTIR?

Oh Edmonton, the gift that keeps on giving.
Darnell Nurse is probably a mid to bottom pairing Dman on any team thats any good, but because hes with the Oilers hes going to get paid and in doing so hes going to wind up screwing them.
Its just....its just so Oilers.

From where do you see this sudden offensive surge coming for him? What has suddenly now changed this season to see him drive an improvement in his own production to the tune of more than 20%?
Nugent-Hopkins has never broken the 60-point mark, and the closest he came to doing so was as the Oilers undisputed top-line centre with PP1 time and extremely generous offensive-zone starts. I would say a career best 60-point season from him while being glued to McDavid's hip is about the best that can be expected from him.
Yes, you in fact are missing it. The point is this:
No. Not even Propaganda Minister Bob Stauffer's exaggerated projections and a butter-soft schedule can save the Oilers.
No one can.
No one.
The point is, Edmonton is no good.

In regards to Nugent-Hopkins, his points increased A LOT when he was moved to McDavid's line last year. They definitely have some chemistry.

Pretty easy to do when your so far out of the playoffs race that its like your at the bottom of a mountain looking up God Toga of Apollo
I mean seriously the coaching conversation with that first line would literally have been
T-Mac - All right RNH . . . the Nuge himself on a line with Connor. All right, so here's the system we're going to play"
Connor - "No good Connor score only job"
T-Mac - "Yeah but we need to get some good habits so that next year we can compete fror a play . . . "
RNH - "Seriously piss off"
