Coaching a tournament and coaching an NHL team are two completely different beasts. One is a temporary assignment where you're trying to sort out who's playing on what line, and establishing a basic set of positioning tactics ... the other is a long term, systems-based, relationship building endeavour.

If you looked at Peters' time in Carolina and didn't like it, stick with your initial assessment because years in the NHL carries a lot more weight than this tournament. If you looked at his time in Carolina and said you're still willing to give benefit of the doubt, then this tournament should play essentially no weight into changing your mind.

Just because he's now 'ours' does not mean that a fun little experience with international play suddenly is more important than his years-long body of work before he was with the Flames

Right. I forgot that Finland lost to Denmark, so the Danes would finish ahead of the Finns even if they're tied. The Finns could finish anywhere from 1st to 4th.

it's not hard to defend on the big ice surface. Latvia would get whalloped on NHL ice.

Plenty of top level NHL coaches have lost at the WC

its just a tournament with a random assortment of players thrown together at the last minute. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Is Jon Cooper a good coach?

I think Peters' win in 2016 should count as much as the results of this year will. Either not at all, or critically important

Big ice, small ice doesn't cut it. Not one NHL player on the Latvian team. Team Canada is pathetic.

Lol at beating Latvia in OT. This team is toast in the quarters. Coach Peters trending down already.

I always liked Bob Hartley. He sure is getting a lot out of his roster.

rolling two lines in the 3rd when you had the superior squad was odd.

if lottery ball didn't score that fluke goal this could've been embarrassing.

And they're missing their three best defensemen and 1 or 2 of their top forwards to boot

Maybe Hartley can coach Peters how to be a better coach.

There was only one player who was responsible for Latvia getting a point today and it wasn't a forward or defenceman.

They had two shots in the third period and were able to score on one of them.

That Latvia’s such a lucky team. I tell you. I haven’t seen a Corsi so bad on a competitive team since the 14-15 Flames. Tough crowd, I’m here all week. Try the steak.

You raise a good point, but part of being an NHL coach is making the short-term adjustments that are the whole of tournament coaching. They are not entirely seperate; there is some overlap.

To be honest i think some of us are being too hard on Peters. Those games are not as important, in a tournament like this, elimination games are what matters most. The seed for the quarterfinal matters only if you can win the group stage and avoid one of the Big Six, but even if you do, the ultimate goal is to win the whole thing and so you will have to beat them sooner or later anyway. We have yet to see what that team and that coach can do with no room for errors. Btw there are good odds for some Flames matchups in the QF at the moment. Finland is leading USA by score 3-0 after 2 periods, if Finns win, USA will play against Czech Republic, in which case we would witness the Johnny vs. Rittich showdown (if Rittich gets the nod of course). Would be great if Russia beats Sweden in their final group stage outing, because that would send Sweden led by their captain Backlund against our new coach and some of the Spoilers.

Finland up 3-0 in the third against US. Looks to win the group despite losses to Denmark and Germany.

Johnny having a terrible game. Losing pucks left and right. Looks frustrated.

On NHL Radio, Patrick O’Sullivan said the players just need to go to bed earlier and get some rest. He said he’s played in this tournament enough to know what the players get up to at night. They are burning the candle at both ends.

Yeah I don't think they take this tournament as seriously as the Olympics as it's a bit of a hockey holiday for them.
