Gaudreau > Simmonds
Monahan > Simmonds

I wouldn't trade either straight up for Simmonds, never mind both.

...and I like Simmonds.

Both Monny and Johnny is an exaggeration.

I wouldn't trade Monny who is a #1 C for a winger.

A top-six forward, a 1st round pick, and a B-level prospect.

The Flames don't have the assets.

Isn't Simmons himself a top 6 forward?

LOL I can't believe you people thought I was being serious (at least about the Johnny+Money bit). I thought Simmonds had more years left on his deal (my how time flies), but IMO he has the best value deal in the league right now (aside maybe from Crosby). I can't imagine any trade that gives anything resembling fair value at a reasonable cap hit.

lol no kidding. I have a huge man crush on Simmonds, but he's not worth even half of that. I'd LOVE to add the guy but he's going to get hilariously overpaid this summer

I don't really see the big deal in powderjunky's comment.
It was asked what it would take to get Simmonds, not what we would pay.
By listing two assets we would never part with, he is saying Simmonds is untouchable, which is what he literally says the next sentence.

Apparently sens could potentially be sellers at the deadline if they continue to struggle, and I’d freakin love if we went after Hoffman. He can play either wing, has a bomb of a shot, and is deadly on the PP. I feel he’s also one of the more underrated guys in the league. On a fair contract for 2.5 more years too. If BT is interested in Kane, I feel Hoffman should also be on his list.

Also, the Oilers are interested in Hoffman and if there is one thing Treliving likes to do, its steal people out from under the Oilers.

Good article. But after reading it, I have absolutely ZERO doubt he is heading the UFA route, and is going for a massive payday that most people will likely think is a huge overpayment the second it is signed. One of those ''sets the bar'' contracts some agents seem to squeeze out of a dumb GM each year. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he was looking for 7.5+/y, given the cap is going up and he has pretty good intangibles.

Even Kane can’t deny the allure of going to market just to experience free agency for the first time. “You’ve got to live in reality,” he said. “This is my ninth year in the league. I’m very aware that, as much as it’s a game, No. 1, it’s always a business. It’s always about money. You see that with lockouts and CBA negotiations and player holdouts. That’s why you have an agent, to make you aware of your options, your possibilities that may happen and what goes on during or after a season.”
Giving up huge assets for a rental? No thanks.

With only 1.5 years left, there are tons of players who have more trade value based on their skill level and contract.

Monny and Johnny come quickly to mind. Hamilton likely also.

You are correct, contract plays heavily into a players trade value, but 1.5 years until UFA, when at the age of 31 he'll want to be paid and paid heavy. His next contract will likely be a buyers remorse one.

Agreed. I found it interesting that
a) his teammates, at least 3 of them, like the guy
b) The way they described his personality, his tastes etc was interesting. He'll want to play in an upscale environment. Not that Calgary isn't, but he'll want a NYC or LA

I predict he'll want to play in a high end market, but will just miss. He ends up a New Jersey Devil.

I'm really worried Treliving is going to double down in desperation to make the playoffs and trade more assets/picks for a guy that is not a difference maker on another team outside the playoffs. If this team can't make the playoffs with the current roster that sports numerous improvements over last season I think he needs to look in other directions in regards to where changes need to be made.

I don't want anyone off this team not named Brouwer, Stajan, F. Hamilton, or Lazar. Can't see any of that fetching us anything of value so I really don't want to be in the trade market at all. Particularly the stupid inflated deadline market for what is a decent player with a history of being a terrible teammate.
