I would have said "spend the money on forwards". But if you really absolutely had to have another defenceman, take that 3.5 million and put it towards Del Zotto or Franson or hell, spend half that much on Patrick Wiercioch. All of whom are much better at hockey than Michael Stone is.
All teams have one or two of these overpayments, for sure. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to avoid them.

This. So much this.
Also, where is the room for kids to play now? We have an abundance of kids that look like they're trending great to fill those bottom D spots and now one of the spots is plugged. I get that people are afraid of playing kids but it has to happen at some point. 3 years blocks that for a sizeable chunk of time. One year would've been fine. But 3?
I don't usually fall for the college player scare the way some people do but you have to wonder if a guy like Fox looks at this now and thinks he'll find better opportunity somewhere else.
Oh, and we bled another pick.
I'll see how this turns out but right now I don't like it very much.

Maybe the agreement had nothing to do with FA period, and just if he did re-sign?

Wow, just caught up on the thread.
I see the vocal minority is at it again.
Some of you whiners don't deserve a D core this stacked and deep.

Interesting, my understanding was the condition was if they re-signed him at all
Maybe they were worried the Leafs or Jets would swoop in and give him 4 mil

Ryan Pike apparently confirmed with the team a few weeks ago the Flames would lose the pick even if they signed Stone after July 1st. Similar condition to the Elliott trade

Yeah, Treliving did confirm a few weeks back in an interview that the condition was whether he re-signed or not, July 1 did not matter.

I was wanting to get Stone back from day 1, but didn't think we would. He's intelligent, well-spoken and wants to be here. He's great a rubbing people out and is smart around his own net. Was able to pot a few goals as well. Didn't think we'd get him after the Hamonic trade!

Probably because if he gets to July 1st that the agent at the very least has to present his client offers from other teams and if a desperate team comes to him with a $4.5 x 3 offer or something like that he probably has to seriously consider that over this contract.

You are the most self righteous poster on the message board. NHL GM's have more knowledge, experience and data that you do when they make these decisions. They also have to deal with something called a "free market" which is what determines the value of a player.
I'm sure everyone is tired of you continually stating how much smarter you are than the people who actually get paid to do this for a living. This isn't The Big Short and you aren't the genius sitting in the corner that's figured everything out.

It's not always about where he slots in, in the Flames lineup. It's about Stones value around the league. I think 3.5 for 3 gives Stone value and makes him an asset on the blue line, or in a trade down the road if it doesn't work out.

How is this point lost on a few of you who are panicking:
There's room for a rookie *right now*.
IF two rookies come in and outplay Stone (unlikely immediately) even a year from now, we trade Stone to re-coup pics. He can easily be converted to other assets and we insert the young emerging rookie(s).
Couldn't be more simple and that would be a GOOD problem to have, if it arises.
In the meantime, we solidify one of the best top fives in the league, and don't have to worry about inserting a rookie into the top four if there's an injury.

If his plan is to stack the D and let the forward group grow, I'm on board with that. Flames trouble wasn't scoring, it was getting scored on
|
Completely agreed. I think the only major need was that number 5 dman . With this done sit back, see if there are any bargain fwds but I'd be ok with our forwards as they stand today with the rfa's signed.
Man, the only major roster question mark is goaltending. If the flames can get top 3rd goaltending, no reason this can't be a contender.
