Minor quibble: What makes you think Johnson needs to take a PTO? He's a pretty good backup that will have plenty of options in the summer once some backups get taken by Vegas.

^Do players from the previous season ever even get brought back to their same team for a PTO? Can't think of any examples off the top of my head

You don't bring in a backup who saved your season on a PTO the next season, that's such an unclassy move.

Odd...if he doesn't have a contract in the NHL, then how does it lack class? You're giving him the opportunity to make an NHL team that he otherwise wouldn't have.

Johnson won't be lacking a contract next season.

Johnson will definitely be signed by somebody by roughly July 5.

i'm more interested in keeping Johnson than I am Elliott

I'm willing to try a Johnson/Gillies or Johnson/Rittich combo to start next year - if the team uses the cap space to bring in a bonafide #1 RW.

I agree, though I would prefer a Raanta/Johnson combo. Could really take advantage of Raanta's $1M 1 year contract.

Grubauer is a RFA, but I can't see him getting a huge contact either. So a Grubauer/Johnson combo would also be appealing and cost-effective.

At least three teams will be losing a solid backup in the expansion draft. Johnson has shown himself to be a capable backup throughout his career.

I'll be very surprised if he doesn't have a contract very early in July. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he has a contract before Elliott.

If Elliott wants anything near the $2.7m he made last year I can see him playing darts with Glencross at the Legion before playing goal.

Johnson was not good last year.
Why would we want him back?

A backup playing 36 games, winning over half, and with reasonable stats is the opposite of not good.

Johnson was the best back up goalie the Flames had since Wamsley and I would be happy to have him in the same role next season.

2.59 GAA and 0.910 sv% is the opposite of not good?

24th in the league in GAA, 33rd in sv%, and 33rd in wins is good for a backup.

If goaltending sinks this team for the third season in a row I'm going to be pissed.

And more interestingly, Johnson caught fire for a stretch of the season. For a backup that's what we want to see - a guy who can come in for 4 to 6 weeks and carry the team until the #1 gets healthy or seizes the net back.

I would be happy to see Johnson back but only on a short term contract.

As for Elliott, Flames need to find another starter... for the most part Elliott had a poor season with the exception of 20 game segment.

Flames were lucky, Johnson played really well...

Flames need to step up and find another goalie

Also not true. Geez, a lot of Flames fans are really confused about the value of our two goaltenders because they're understandably not happy with their performance last season.

They may not be who we want back because we want to move on and attempt to get into that elite goaltending circle to become a contender, but Johnson will get a contract and likely in July, and Elliott will be playing somewhere in the NHL for more than he currently makes, not sitting at the legion with Glencross.

Some of the stuff you read on here, man.

It is pretty hilarious watching the goalie discussion.

Bishop after a .910 year (following 2/3 at .920 or higher): "Sure, I'd still pay 6x6 for that, it's just a down year! He's a franchise goaltender!"

Johnson after a .910 year (following 2/3 at .920 or higher): "We'd be doing him a favour to offer him a PTO."

Elliott after a .910 year (following 2/3 at .920 or higher): "He'll be drinking at the legion with Glencross!!"

MAF after a .909 year (following 2/3 at .920 or higher): "He's the best of what's left, we need to trade for him.... wait, he's so good... maybe we'll just get Murray instead!?"
