If we can get a good goalie from Vegas at minimal acquisition cost, I think that may be a better options than what is available in free agency. I'm sure there is a lot of horse trading going on as we speak and getting a younger G with upside (along the lines of Talbot) would be preferable than what is out there on ufa market. To coin a Feaster line, the ufa market will be full of post apex goalies and would much rather roll the dice on a G with upside where we don't have to overpay in dollars and term.

After the last two years, you really want to roll the dice again?

Got news for you Gordon, any player brought in is a roll of the dice. Unless you're strapping a 6x4 sheet of 2" thick plywood to the goal posts, there is no guarantee of the next great goaltender coming to town and stinking the joint up. It might just be time for the Flames to go the same route they did when they won their only cup, and look for someone from inside the organization. Vernon was no world beater in the minors, but he turned out okay.

If the UFA goalies out there were that good then they wouldn't be available to begin with.. Stay home grown. Maybe Elliott / Johnson gets a one year deal to help break in someone like Rittich (when he gets signed)

You can look for goalies both inside and outside the organization at the same time. (To some extent at least.)

What does stay home grown mean when we likely don't have a realistic home grown option for the next couple of years? It's a nice thing to suggest, and its the best course of action if it's actually an option for you, but I don't think we'd be having this type of conversation about our goaltending if anyone thought the answers for the next few seasons already existed in the organization.

Tre says they didn't try to land Bishop this year...
“I’ve heard I’ve tried to get him three or four times, which isn’t correct,” Treliving told the Sun. “We’re looking at goaltending, so it’s natural we’d be poking around. Did we look at it as an option? Yes. But the assumption we can make is that for the American guy who played minor league hockey in Texas coming to Calgary was probably not choice No. 1. And if he was, it was probably for a long time for a lot of dough.”

Edit**
What a dumb article lead by TSN. Tree looked at it as an option, but nowhere does it actually say he didn't try to trade for him.

Tree doesn't say he didn't try to trade for him - he said he didn't try to trade for him three or four times - it's because he looked twice. Once at last year's draft, and again around the trade deadline.

Awe Friedman has blown smoke yet again! This whole thread is nonsense. Calgary was on his no trade list as per TSN article. I seriously doubt it got as far as the ownership nixing the deal.
"Bishop, who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent in July, signed a six-year, $29.5 million a few days after being traded to Stars. Francis reports the Flames inquired with the Kings on Bishop but were told Calgary was on his no-trade list."

You are so off base - but I imagine it's just because you've not been paying attention. Bishop agreed to waive to go to Calgary last summer, and that ownership blocked the trade/extension that would have happened at that time.
The news of Bishop being dealt to/signing with Dallas was accompanied by news that Bishop effectively chose Dallas over Calgary - which he would have been able to by blocking a trading of his rights to Calgary this time around.

I don't think you can say that Bishop agreed to come to Calgary last summer and he agreed again after he was traded to the Kings. After the debacle of last summer, Bishop could have changed his mind about Calgary.

I never intended to say he would have accepted a trade to Calgary after being dealt to the Kings, in fact we effectively know that he chose Dallas over Calgary.

With goalies, you're ALWAYS rolling the dice.
Source of opinion: I'm a lifetime goalie, who coaches, idolizes, and tracks goalies.

My point is that I only know that he chose Dallas. I don't know if Calgary was in the mix at all. The speculation about Bishop being traded to the Kings and the Flames not getting it done because of KK is interesting because Yzerman said that the Kings were the only team in play when Tampa was trying to trade Bishop. Yzerman said this publicly at the news conference after the trade.
I don't know anything that Friedman or Francis says to be true because they are not in the organization and are not quoting Treviling or Burke. Anonymous sources in the organization means nothing because I could be their anonymous source.

I believe from what I have heard is that he agreed last summer and just before the deadline and after two failed chances he decided not to give the Flames another opportunity.

Agreed. If I were to deal with the goalie situation, this is what I would do:
-- Trade for Fleury or sign Elliott for 2 years
-- Bring in Johnson on a PTO
-- Let Johnson, Gillies or Rittich fight for the back-up position
