I figure this'll be a good fit. Versteeg can have and has had success playing with high skill guys like Monahan and Gaudreau. For me, it's him staying healthy for a good chunk of the season. I like this. And I also figure you now have a rotating top 2 natural RW's in case Brouwer Bennett gets stale and you can roatate Versteeg / Brouwer between the top two lines.

Because it makes more sense having him in the top-6 than 3rd line Centre. Especially since they believe Cagguila is ready for that spot.

How did everyone forget about Brouwer and Frolik already? Both are excellent middle 6 RWs and can slot in on the top line. All this does is expand depth. While we don't have an offensive driver on the right side this leaves us with a really balanced middle 6 that is defensively sound and can chip in secondary scoring. If Versteeg can just not bring down Monahan and Gaudreau this will be a big win for us. Even if it doesn't pan out it makes it a lot easier to swallow if Brouwer moves to the top line and allows Versteeg to cover for him instead of an unproven rookie. I really don't see a downside.

They should swap Lucic and Pouliot... I don't think Lucic will be able to keep up with the other two.

After Eberle it's ugly. Jesse Puljujärvi and Leon Draisaitl have name value but one is 18, a true 18 year old who didn't look anything more than okay in the preseason. The other is a natural center who will line up at his off wing, a position he's never played as far as I can tell. If we're looking for depth at true position the Flames have Brouwer, Frolik, Versteeg Chaisson. The Oilers have Eberle and Zach Kassian.

Leon Draisaitl at RW just looks odd. He has the smarts to play center in the NHL.

Don't forget about Versteeg now having D that can actually execute a stick to stick pass.
That's kind of important to him, I am sure.

He was fine in preseason..

As was Maroon last year who is slower than Lucic IMO.

I wonder if the Oilers regret trading Yakupov now that Versteeg signed

Doubt it, they've been trying to move him for how long now?

Biggest regret would not be dipping into the waiver wire yesterday to shore up a weak position. Should have had Versteeg signed before that option was eliminated.

That was before he signed with us

Draisaitl started off last season at Right Wing with Hall and RNH when he scored 17 points in his first ten games or whatever it was.

He's had success there.

He had a similarly sad blog after the yakupov trade also.
I suck with posting pictures but some of those pictures of Pulju in the comments are hilarious.

Didn't realize Versteeg was such a feisty player (had a 172 PIMS one year in junior!). He's a pretty decent fighter for his size. Good to have a guy like that on that line with Johnny and Sean.

I remember the last time (IIRC) that the Flames signed a guy who'd completed a PTO on a rival team. It worked quite well. The guy got 43 points in 66 games before getting hurt.
