I have to agree with FDW's opinion on Ferland and of course, time will tell, so let's just not worry about future possibilities when we have no way to tell yet.

Amazing.

If so, Treliving is operating on another level right now.

Snatches a player at the last minute from the Oilers, while simultaneously causing them to miss out on Parenteau because they thought they had Versteeg locked up.

While Chiarelli was busy eating turkey, BT was setting his trap.

Not a bad week's work so far, Mr. Treliving (and it's only Tuesday).

I am reluctant about this signing. It's with the off ice issues that are holding me back.

Perhaps he'll be like Bertuzzi and demonstrate he has his act cleaned up.

Even if he sucks all year and gets waived, the fact that he snubbed the Oilers to sign here makes it all worth while

Not optimal to be counting on a guy like this to play top line RW but the reality is he's probably the best option we have as a stop gap. I cringed at the thought of Chaisson up there, and think Ferland would be better served developing on the bottom six.

Versteeg has some good experience and silky mitts. Hopefully he finds chemistry with Gaudreau and Monahan

While we're in a state of mixed emotions (some happy with recent events, some not) I'll take this opportunity to ask everyone to brace themselves on the off chance Kulak is sent down this afternoon.

I just hope he picks #33. I want to see a 13-23-33 top line! Great signing.

If that's the worst thing that happens today, not going to worry about it.

Prediction: Goal & an assist on opening night from Versteeg. All that practice firing pucks at Talbot. He's should be able to exploit that.

Versteeg has a chance to play with better line mates in Calgary on the 1st or 2nd line (if Matt goes down). He would have been playing 3rd line in Edmonton. Probably a better choice for him.

Ok, someone has to tell me about the documented incidents off-ice that Versteeg has been involved in. I literally haven't heard any of this until today.

I don't want to hear a bunch of random speculation from guys who heard something from their 2nd cousin. I don't think that's going to do any good here.

It makes a lot of sense with the World Cup. Teams need PTO players to play in preseason games due to NHL rules stipulating a minimum amount of veterans. With the World Cup, there's a lot more veterans not around for the first couple preseason games so there's more spots to fill. A lot of these PTOs aren't really competing for a job on that particular team - they are just trying to get some additional game tape out there to show they can still play.

If he goes to the Monahan line you have the Flames four young forwards riding shot gun beside Versteeg and Brouwer which is a very smart way to roll things out this year.

If he doesn't go up that high perhaps he could play the off wing with Backlund and Frolik but someone I doubt that's the plan.
So much this. Add in Frolik on the third line and our RW has basically become the veteran leadership of winners. Sure Versteeg might not put up the numbers, but there are three guys all from the Blackhawks when they were developing into their current form. Guys who have won cups, seen multiple teams and coaches and know what it takes to win. This is exactly what you want with your young group of talent. I love where BT is taking this team.

It's Talbot. Easiest goalie in the league to scout.

"How do you beat Talbot"

"Shoot."

"Shoot?"

"Yeah, shoot - from anywhere."

I am not a big fan of Versteeg at this stage in his career but shows the state of affairs of our RW that he is already pencilled in on top line. It's worth a shot at least.

Johnny and Sean aren't going to get a true first line RW to play with. Not this season at least, likely. What they need is a guy that just isn't going to drag them down. Who has offensive instincts and ability to finish off a good Johnny or Mony pass or keep the puck cycling in the offensive zone. The problem is the options presented to us over training camp don't inspire confidence that they can even do that. So no, while Versteeg is not the ideal choice for a 1RW on any team, he is at the very least a better one than Ferland or Chiasson. Neither of those guys have shown enough finish (both scoring under 10 goals last season..Ferland with 4, having spent time on that line already). I know everyone still wants to believe Ferland can break out in a big way given his junior career but we shouldn't be banking on it by not giving ourselves other options. Versteeg has played up on lineups in the past and has at least shown to be competent in that regard.

Wouldn't he have slotted in right behind Eberle on the depth chart?
