CNRL has also opened up its airstrip, and have westjet flying in to take some evacuees out as well.

Some incredible people were going up and down the highway fueling cars and trucks up for free that had run out of gas and diesel. One friend just got to Edmonton an hour ago. I am trying to focus on all of the amazing people who are coming out of the woodwork.

If military is mobilized, and it turns out to be overkill, isn't it better safe than sorry? Couldn't the military help with the evac at the very least?

The provincial government has to send a Request for Assistance to the Federal government. The Federal government will consult with DND to determine what can be done, and by whom. As far as I know, the request was sent, but it will take a few days to respond. The Air Force can respond quite quickly. The Army, however, is trickier.
Not that there is a good time, but this is the absolute worst time for the Army (in this case 3 Div/1 CMBG). Why? Because 1 CMBG is right between two major exercises and I'd say the vast majority of those personnel are on leave right now. 3 Div/1 CMBG deploys mid-May for several weeks for EX MAPLE RESOLVE and this is a confirmatory exercise for 1 CMBG's high readiness as they are the next CMBG slated for deployment (UKRAINE, Eastern Europe and the MIDDLE EAST) July/August 2016.
All that to say that the Army assistance may not even be from Alberta (except the primary reserve) and that will mean moving personnel from elsewhere in Canada.
I do not know what the plan is; I assume I'll find out when I get to work this morning.

It shouldn't need too many soldiers if they use nukes. I don't think the fire will respond that well to conventional tactics anyway.

Fire has mostly blown through #ymm. Spot fires remain in town but no homes are still burning. Fire conditions could change things though.

I am assuming that tom moffat's twitter was hacked - what a donkey.
If you think the oil is dirty that is one thing, but to talk about karma........
it is really hard to wrap your head around an entire city having to evacuate - I truly hope that the damage to the city as a whole is contained as much as possible.

This is awful and this is scary to watch. I hope everyone is safe from these fires.
This post has nothing to do with gloating or karma or any of that stupid hateful b.s. being posted here and there.
But make no mistake; this isn't some fluky act of God. This is what climate change looks like. Get used to it and other awful environmental catastrophes to come.

Nope, not hacked. If you look at his history, he is always an idiot. That guy is to the NDP what the "lake of fire" idiots were to Wildrose.
