My best friend said he's on standby to go up there (he's a fire fighter). Help is on the way it sounds like. Hope the fire settles down overnight.

Is this the second time the Facebook safety check-in thing has been done? Last time I saw one was during the Paris terror attacks... had to have family members check in as "safe" during both now.

WestJet has sent at least one plane each from Calgary and Edmonton, also Canadian North and Air North, Air Canada Jazz, and many other smaller chartered aircraft. Pretty impressive operation on short notice.

Still early. Calgary will be fine for at least the next few days.

Also, I have posted in the FB groups, but if anyone requires (or knows someone) that requires a place to stay or a pickup from the airport, I have a fully-finished basement and spare room available. Also, everything a 0-2 year old would require.
I am in Calgary

I am up at CNRL horizon. Some evacuees are being housed at our camps. You can see the fear or shock in some of the kids' faces.
This is a very tragic day for sure

Not sure that those areas are on fire, it sounds like they have just been evacuated so far?
All the chaos on the roads and hi way, amazing there's been no serious injuries.

If this is true, that's basically all of Fort Mac. I think Timberlea was the last community to the north. Brutal.

Thought I came across that while reading online. Can't find it again though so hopefully you're right. Sounds like it's just that the active front is very close and on the wrong side of the river.
Sorry all for potentially spreading misinformation.

Just stumbled across the Reddit live feed thread which seems to be the best source I've found for constant updates.

It's reddit, so take it for what it's worth, but a comment from 26 minutes ago said that there are fires confirmed in Timberlea but no damage as of yet:

Found where I read that. Obviously can't confirm the validity. Fire in Timberlea area, but damage in Dickensfield which is pretty much right there. If not already then it sounds like an inevitability.

Is there a way to donate from overseas?

Ok I'm no expert, by why hasn't a state of emergency been declared and the military mobilized right away?
If military is mobilized, and it turns out to be overkill, isn't it better safe than sorry? Couldn't the military help with the evac at the very least?
PS: I hope people save comments/fb posts from the dicks who are saying Fort Mac or Albertans in general deserve this.

I was thinking the same thing. Really ? I haven't seen any negative comments, but how childish.

My wife sent me a link from some a-hole on FB saying that it's their own fault because of oil exploration. I want to do bad things to him. I won't link him, but his name is Eric Lav.
