Player salaries COME OUT OF HRR. More revenue, but more teams to divide it up between as well.

A little long, but good price. Love how people were saying no way he'd sign for under 7-7.5 (on hf).

great deal...
term and $ seems to be a tad higher than most here want, but probably the exact opposite in the Gio camp who think is a little short in term and $...
generally a good sign that there has been some compromise by both sides...

Full NMC in years 1-4 of the deal, limited NTC (10 team no-trade list) for years 5-6.

4 years full NTC, 2 years modified NTC.
EDIT: Actually, apparently the first 4 years is a full NMC. Last 2 years has a NTC where Giordano submits 10 teams he will not accept a trade to.

With this extension, Gio will likely be a lock for second all time in games played for the Flames, and second for longest captain, behind Iggy.
Not bad for an undrafted player.

Drafting players is for chumps.

HRR by definition, are not net of salaries, which I thought is what you were saying. My mistake.
Your conclusion though that it is a zero sum game is not accurate. Even without including expansion fees, the expansion to new markets should increase revenue at a faster rate than the dilutive effect of adding two new teams. For example, I think the Canadian TV contract allows for an escalator when a new Canadian market joins. As others have stated, it is tricky to estimate depending on the average contribution of existing teams vs. new teams but I suspect the new teams will be accretive. That is one of the reasons the league wanted to see the results of the season ticket drive in LV. They don't add to add a team that will be a drag on league results (although ponying up $500M would make that easier to swallow).

At just north of 17M, the big 3 for the Flames aren't even all that top heavy when compared to the rest of the league. Taking a quick look around the league at teams that have committed 3 years or more to three defensemen and it's pretty standard to have 15M+ spent on the top 3 defensemen.
Detroit has 15M committed to Green, Ericsson and Kronwall.
Washington has 15M committed to Niskanen, Orpiks and Carlson.
Rangers have 16M committed to Staal, Girardi and McDonagh.
Minnesota has 15.7M committed to Suter, Brodin and Scandella.
Los Angeles has 15M committed to Doughty, Muzzin and Martinez (Voynov being in limbo).
Tampa has 14.5M committed to Stralman, Garrison and Carle (with Hedman to sign).
A team like St. Louis already has 12M committed to Pietrangelo and Bouwmeester, so if they want to re-sign Shattenkirk 2 years from now they will easily become more expensive then the Flames trio.

Edmonton has $13.9M locked up in Sekera, Nikitin and Schultz.
Wow...

I don't think that is even really an outlandish statement or anything. If we did an over or under for 7 million a month ago it would have be an interesting poll.

Griffin Reinhart would have to make the NHL for that to happen.

Great post and very useful information. I like where the Flames sit with this group, but ultimately will depend on Hamilton and Brodie's continued progression and Gio's ongoing health. Seems like a reasonable bet to make. There is upside there - enough upside for a championship team IMO.
Now BT is going to have to start shedding $'s from the bottom pairings.
