When an elite defenceman makes less than a pylon like Phaneuf, that's a good contract even if Phaneuf's deal is bad.

If they were similar players I'd agree.

Hard not to be happy with this. Shorter term than I thought it might have to be (which is a good thing) and less AAV than I expected, especially given the shorter term (although it's still a boat load of cash).

That contract will likely be painful in the last 2 seasons, but likely well worth it and un-avoidable to get the first 3 to 4 years of it, which we simply had to do. Good work by the Flames brass again.

2 or even 3 years too long... but I imagine there was no budging on the term.

Luckily the Phaneuf comparison will help me get over any cap stress quickly...

At the end of the day he's an irreplaceable piece here for the next few years anyways.

From the Gio's initial "ask" thread and my reaction:

Heck, 6 years is stretching it a bit too far for my liking. Would love for it to be around 4 years. If you have to bump up to 8m a year to keep the term low, sure.

I just hope this doesn't turn sour.

In years past, whenever there was news of this kind, inevitably there was something bad attached to it: We traded Regehr. But gave up a 2nd rounder to do it.

I keep waiting for the bad news when we get word of something Treliving has done. Still hasn't happened.

Treliving is the gift that keeps giving.

Just repeat this to yourself:

Mark Giordano has a lower cap hit than Dion Phaneuf.

It never fails to make me smile, so yeah, I think Treliving hit this one out of the park and I have greatly renewed respect for Mark Giordano.

Win/Win/Win/Win.

Sets a great example for the RFAs after this season in my opinion. This is a very good contract

On the same day Gio signs a 6 year extension with the Flames, the Canucks sign Adam Cracknell to a 1 year contract. Good times.

Already discussed, the consideration is whether HRR goes up by more than the average club HRR when the league expands from 30 to 32. This wasn't about the expansion fee.

Since one of those teams is likely to be a Canadian in Quebec, it is a pretty safe assumption that they will be much higher then the average.

Probably, but it's tough to tell. The existing Canadian markets outside of Toronto and Montreal average the same as the league wide average. I imagine Quebec would still do really well for local TV coverage though.

Is there any reason to believe that Quebec wouldn't be above average? At least on par with Winnipeg you gotta think. Not sure of their capacity.

Vegas at least in the short term will probably do alright. Maybe a bit of a novelty at first.

Not likely when you consider a 75 cent dollar

And neither team is likely to lead to significant new TV money

The centre point of the cap range is about $60M. There are 30 teams. So that puts HRR at about $60M x 30 x 2 = $3.6B.

And the average revenue per team at $120M

In order to raise the cap by $1M all by themselves (and assuming LV is average), Quebec would have to generate $184M US ($245M CAD) in revenues.

It is probably a safe assumption that won't happen.

The theory is that expanding into new markets will ultimately increase league revenues. Player salaries though are definitively not a component of HRR so I'm not sure what you are saying.

A little bit longer than i would have liked but overall its a fair deal for both sides. I imagine it's probably front loaded to. I'm just glad to have our Captain signed.

Hey man, even the sun shines on a dog's behind sometimes.

Sidenote, doesn't everyone sniff their own farts every day? I mean everyone loves the smell of their own brand.
