Just because one person does something really bad on bail doesn't necessarily mean the presumption of bail should be removed for all, although I understand the frustration.

Seems like a real grey area situation. Can't just lock up every criminal because some of them can become normal members of society and they just made one or two dumb choices, but then you can't just let dangerous people go so easy.

Buddy of mine had 4 cowboys drag him outside of a bar during Stampede and they curb stomped his face to the point he's permanently disfigured. It was on camera and the guys who did it got zero jail time, that one still bothers me quite a bit. I'm not in favor of vengeance but man, that was a pretty big screwup by the justice system.

This guy seems like a real POS, laughing and swearing at the news cameras...he has nothing to offer society and never will...a 10 cent bullet could save tax payers a lot of money

I'd throw five bucks in for a decent bullet, wouldn't want it to miss.

Yes, we get it. Depression and other mental illness should exonerate this guy. And if you don't agree, smear.

Of course no one did. It's like he replied as confirmation that what I said is true.

He was on bail for a previous charge. I highly doubt he gets one this time.

http://calgaryherald.com/news/crime/...-degree-murder

A Calgary man arrested in the hit-and-run death of a gas station worker is now charged with second-degree murder.

Jury convicts Joshua Mitchell of manslaughter, not murder, in fatal gas-and-dash

Joshua Mitchell was on trial for 2nd-degree murder in the 2015 death of gas station attendant Maryam Rashidi

Not terribly surprised by that verdict, actually.

This would be one situation where I kind of wish we had capital murder in our books. I get the manslaughter conviction but it's not even close to enough.

So what does this mean? Time served, and then he gets counseling for life for the trauma he caused himself, and a nice healthy disability pension for PTSD for the horrific thing he witnessed? And some hugs? And a therapy beagle?

In seriousness I'll put the over under at walking the streets within 5 years. And take the under.

Most manslaughter cases fall within the range of 4 to 15 years.

Manslaughter is the right verdict.

What isn't right, is this scum of the earth piece of garbage waste of sperm will be out in 5 years or less.

I get the manslaughter conviction but the penalties for manslaighter need to be way more severe. Sure, it not murder, but it's not far off. Anything less than 15 years will be a joke.

So with time served, we're looking at his release in 30-48 months in all likelyhood.

Gross.

And I too agree it's manslaughter. I'm sure he didn't wake up that day and say I'm killing a gas clerk. But he had a choice to ditch and run. But valued a $100 tank of diesel over this woman's life.
