Joshua Cody Mitchell appeared briefly Thursday in a Calgary courtroom on charges which include criminal negligence causing the death of Maryam Rashidi.
Mitchell, 20, was arrested Jan. 30, and released on bail on charges of dangerous driving and possession of a stolen motor vehicle as well as driving without a licence and having no insurance.
He was wanted on a warrant on those charges after failing to appear on a subsequent court date.
Mitchell also had warrants for other outstanding charges including fraud and assault, court records show.

I find Facebook pages like this so interesting after the fact. Parole officers and police should have someone monitoring the social media of frequent offenders- a comment like "dum ####ing cops haha didnt charge me for shutting down 5 schools" should be cause enough to file the charges that they didn't in the first place...
If anything comes out of this, I hope that CPS and the Crown will place tougher restrictions on offenders like this. I find it so sickening this person was on the streets in the first place, instead of being locked up for being a habitual offender. I can't imagine how friends and family of this poor woman feel with these new developments.

They implemented a system in Winnipeg, that drastically reduced auto thefts. In fact, the program won International Policing Awards.

If we could start up a petition to copy this program in Alberta, do you think it could get 10,000 signatures? If so, I would start one up. The new Government would have to look into it, if a petition was successful.

Give him the maximum that he can get if and when he's found guilty.
Scumbags like this don't deserve freedom.

Unfortunately I have that feeling the Canadian Justice system will once again let us down and the "he has learned his lesson how about 10 years with parole in 5" will be coming down the pipe.

This is senseless to me.
This scumbag seems unrepentant, unashamed, and most of all defiant.
In court he'll be whining, crying and looking all teary eyed.
The irony of it all, is that in the victim's home country, he would probably be given a death sentence, or a life sentence with a few hundred lashes.
On a separate/related topic, has anyone found a way to deposit into the victim's fund electronically?

It will amount to wire transfer if your bank is not TD, which will cost you some fees. If your bank is TD, then, you may be able to do an in branch transfer online but you'll still need the name of the receipient.
I plan to just walk down to a TD branch and do it this afternoon, much easier.

I'd imagine if you mentioned what it was for the bank would waive the fees for you...

It will still be a wire transfer/remittance which will require you to fill out a lot of things. Totally not worth the effort. If your bank is not TD, it's much easier just to talk to a TD branch and do it there.
