They do not play hockey the way the Flames used to. This is the new era where players start in a certain position but are free to pretty much go wherever they want whenever they want.

On HNiC after the game, one of the commentators started talking about Hartley and how hard he used to be on rookies. I missed the rest of it and I think it was something that Mike Keane said - did anyone here catch that?

Yeah, Friedman was talking about how hard he used to be on rookies, and then went on to suggest that Hartley has really embraced the rookies and is relishing the job of developing them now.

He didn't come right out and say it directly, but I go the impression that he was suggesting that Hartley had changed, and now appears to be great with the kids.

"I smell chocolate fumes"

Scott Parker lashed out at Hartley last year about this, calling him a bully.

I've watched the highlights of this game a few times now... Man I love that gaudreau goal. Everything from the perfect gio pass to the perfect hudler pass to the quick hands from Johnny. Just beautiful from one end of the ice to the other. I could see Johnny going on a crazy hot streak this month and closing the gap for first in rookie scoring. Love watching this team play. It's awesome that I go into games expecting them to win now... No matter who the opponent is.

I was watching that, but I wasn't sure whether to believe it or not.

I believe Tanguay, Drury and Hejduk all broke out in the league under Hartley, and both had excellent rookie and sophomore campaigns. They were also paired with Sakic and Forsberg as well, which shows a lot of 'trust' by Hartley. A 23 year old Donovan, 24 year old Yelle, and a 23 year old Deadmarsh all saw lots of games under Hartley.

Goes to Atlanta, and I thought he did very well with the youth. A sophomore (21 year old) Heatley exploded under him. A sophomore (19 yo) Kovalchuk did very well under him. 21 year old Stefan - though established already - was also highly trusted by Hartley.

I am just not sure that Hartley was ever such a 'anti-youth' kind of guy. Hard, yes. I remember Tanguay talking about Hartley before he left Calgary and saying that Hartley was hard on him, but was 'good' for him. I would figure if Hartley was unbearable, then Tanguay probably wouldn't have been hoping for him to be hired.

I have no doubt that he has softened a bit, however. I just don't think he was as hard as Friedman was implying, as he gave lots of chances to some very young players and trusted them on the top lines during his coaching experience in the NHL, and had these kids thrive under his watch.

You and I must be watching different players. Ferland looks like he has the potential to be a solid second liner to me. He's big, fast, good defensively, has great hands, has a great shot, has a great physical game and good offensive awareness. He's better than Bouma already imo.

Yeah I hate to get too excited about Ferland but I think he's going to be damn good for us.. Much better than 4th line W.

Can't we just have 4 good lines and not worry about who's first or fourth? It doesn't matter.
