Nice that he was on your radar back then. Good report.
He strikes me as a poor man's Kesler... Speedy, in your face, 2-way centre, 6'2" & right-hand shot. Exactly the kind of player we need in the bottom 6, with top 6 upside. Very exciting!
Now I'm going to have to change my Draft predictions post... I thought he'd be joining us at the Draft!
So you're saying we just got a 6 foot+ version of theo fleury who wins face-offs?
Did you just compare an unproven decent prospect to the freakin man???
If he was a 6 foot version of Fleury that could win faceoffs he would have been drafted #1 overall.

I'm still confused about why they can't sign him until July 5.
The 50 contract limit shouldn't be an issue because his contract won't start until next season, and they're well under 50 contracts for next season. Last year, the Flames signed a couple of college free agents late in the season when they were at 50 contracts, but because they were contracts for 2012-13, they were able to get them signed and they even played for Abbotsford in the playoffs.
They're not signing him as a free agent, which was the whole point of acquiring his rights (and he wouldn't have hit free agency until August 16th), so they shouldn't have to wait for free agency to start.
They have to wait to sign Ramo because he's a defected player, having played in the KHL, but there shouldn't be any such restrictions on Knight. He should be in the same situation as Ramage was.

Contracts do not officially expire until then is my understanding...
Maybe it allows the Flames to push year one to next year instead of this ?

Knight doesn't have a contract now, and any deal he will sign will specifically start in 2013-14. Not sure if there is an actual requirement holding the signing up, or if they just haven't ironed out a detail or two yet.
This and the Erixon trade are Feaster's two best moves. Ironically, when you compare the two it should illustrate just how good of value Feaster got for Erixon. Not identical situations but pretty damn close.
Still very anti-Feaster, but credit is due today.
His work in June is vastly superior than in all other months it seems.
Knight could turn into a Bolland-type guy as a 2nd/3rd line center who plays all situations and is absolutely needed to be a successful team in this league. Not many good teams have not had that all-situations shut down center who can contribute on the offense. This guy has that upside. Outstanding pickup.

He is also the first player at UND to record 40+ points in three straight seasons since TJ Oshie and Ryan Duncan did so in the 2007-08 season.
Funny, all of the early comparisons to a poor man's Toews, Stoll, Bolland, etc. But TJ Oshie specifically mentioned in this article is probably the closest comparison (one can only hope - the type you build winners around)...
Oshie, Center (Born 1986, Mt. Vernon, WA , 5.11 / 194 LBS)
129 GP Between 3 Seasons @ UND (05/06 - 07/08)
142 Points (59 Goals, 83 Assists)
120 PIMs During That Time
Went straigh to NHL to make impact as third/second line Center:

I understand comparing the two but they are pretty different style players. Oshie is unique especially as a North American and in college, played a pretty electrifying skill game. As has been mentioned quite a bit, Knight is less flashy, more similar to what Toews or Bozak brought in college, of course a big offensive contributor, but not nearly as flashy or dynamic as Oshie while being far more relied upon in all situations. Oshie was and is fine overall but I see him as a very offensive player who can make plays at speed in ways many other player can't. That's not Knight but he brings a lot to the table in a role that I think is more valuable at the NHL level, especially this time of year as the Bruins are currently demonstrating in spades.

I don't see Knight spending much or any time in AHL. Granted I've never seen the guy play, but statistically he's about a 40-point, two-way centre in the NHL today, and his size should mitigate any transition difficulties.

Not to diminish this signing, or even the value Feaster was able to obtain out of Sather, but today's deal with Florida had Florida with nearly zero leverage except that another team would perhaps swoop in and change Knight's mind.
In the Erixon deal, had Sather not traded for him, Erixon would have been returned to the draft. I don't think it was likely that Erixon would have fallen to the Rangers, and if he had, the Rangers would have ended up having to spend a 1st on him anyways. There wasn't much leverage by Feaster, but much more than Florida had.
I'm not a Feaster supporter, but this is a great move. The 4th round pick probably won't make an impact on the Flames roster for awhile, so getting a somewhat ready prospect who is a centre, has size, can win faceoffs, is in the right age group and can challenge for a spot in the line up next year is great.
As many have said, maybe this keeps the dialogue open and friendly with Florida regarding the #2 pick.
