Skating is actually one of his strong points. He's got excellent speed for his size.

Disagree completely.
Maybe it's a small sample size, but from what I saw of Akim, he couldn't keep up to the pace of an NHL game. I watched him this year and mentioned to my dad that, "he doesn't have the foot-speed to play in the big leagues".
Unless he improves his skating substantially this offseason, I can't see him staying with the big club.

Seriously? Aliu is a horrible skater. He may have some speed but he can't turn or stop worth a damn. If it weren't for the end boards he'd end up in Springbank or Strathmore on the dump ins. Hanowski has an awkward stride and Aliu makes him look like Toller freaking Cranston. Aliu has size, which we desperately need, but his lack of basic skills makes him a player we should not even consider. If he's with the Flames next season that is is a damning endictment on the state of the hockey club. I think we're better than that and have better options.

I'm starting to think Akim Aliu's biggest detriment to his ever achieving success at the NHL level, particularly with the Flames, given the stress the current regime has put on "hockey sense" is, in fact, his lack of hockey sense.

Kind of Hoping the Myers to Calgary rumours are true. And then somehow pry one of Chicagos top four out (Hjallmersson). Good young D with Room for Breen. Ading Breen and Myers to Gio and Brodie would certainly help. With Hjallmersson covering Widemans butt defensively.

One of the fan960morning show guys (can't remember which) was speculating last week that the Flames and Sabres were talking trade, the pieces rumored were:
Cammalleri
Backlund
22nd overall
for
Myers
Vanek
52nd overall
(IIRC)
Way too good to be true.

Yeah, if we pulled that off that'd be a steal. No way it has legs.

To Fla: Tanguay
To CGY: Rights to Knight & a 2nd round pick (#32)
Despite his being surplus to requirements here & having a long contract, his production & the cap hit are ok. We get a shot at a late first/early second round prospect & the chance to sign a potentially NHL-ready prospect.
Any thoughts?

Doesn't Tanguay have the ability to quash it, pretty sure he has a NTC and I can't see him waiving it to go to Florida. He would quit on them by game 15.

It's a Modified NTC according to CapGeek.
I don't know the "modifications", but usually it means it expires at a certain point, or it has a trade window certain times of the year (off-season most likely), or it requires that the player provide a list of teams he will or won't accept a trade to.

Pretty sure the Fan guys puked that out on their own based on Calgary and Buffalo "talking". just spit balling and dreaming or whatever, there was never an actual rumour.

Don't discount the draw of playing in FLA and paying zero tax on income.
That is one heck of a draw for guys pulling down millions in the waning years of their careers. It was the primary reason Bryan Campbell waived to leave Chicago.
That, and I would argue the Panthers are going to be a stronger team than Calgary as the current rosters sit for next season. Maybe riding along with Huberdeau and Drouin would entice him enough.

Phoenix Coyotes: Alexandre Ruuttu (2nd round, 51st overall)
- RW speedster, responsible defensively.
San Jose Sharks: Justin Sefton (3rd round, 89th overall)
-6'3" 226 Right-shooting bruiser on D. No offence to speak of & picks uploads of PIM. Sarich Jr?
Winnipeg Jets: Zachary Yuen (4th round, 119th overall)
- Put up very solid numbers on the Tri-City blueline over 4 years.

I wonder why we didn't offer a 7th round pick for one of these prospects. They are further along in their development and can step in on the Heat. They must be classified as busts otherwise a team would have stepped up and traded for their rights, unless it is a Joey Leach situation and they didn't want to burn a NHL contract spot on them. I look at Petr Straka who was a 2nd round pick for CLB in 2010 and wasn't offered a contract. Then Philly scoops him up as a ufa. He lit up the Q this past season and we could use scoring on the RW. Don't see the harm in using a late round pick to gamble on one of these kids, as they are probably just as likely to turn out as someone we pick in the 7th round.

I'll have to watch him more closely next time I watch him play because I didn't really pay attention to how well he turns, stops and changes direction. I definitely didn't think he had any trouble keeping up with the play though.
I think his awkward skating style does force people to over index on how bad ones speed or general skating abilities are. The guys style and technique are for sure less than desirable, but that doesn't actually matter if he gets it done, just looks funny. I'm definitely interested in looking more closely at him this Pre season.

Goalies take so long to develop that I could see someone snapping up Gibson as high as the 3rd or 4th round. Snag a goalie who is 2 years further along in his development? Makes sense to me.
I wouldn't label him as a bust either, and I think it's more likely that they didn't see a point wasting a contract on a G when they have so many young, elite goalies in their system.

If thats the case, why wouldnt LA deal him for a 7th instead of losing him for zip?

It's a 'buyers market' for goalie prospects. Why would a team waste a pick on someone if they feel they can get him either in the draft or in free agency! There are so many goalie prospects out there & limited contract/roster spots that I doubt there would be much interest in giving up a pick...
