If by 'his old pals' you are referring to Vancouver, I don't think he'll do any favours for the guy who took his job.

No way on Kadri. Too many question marks surrounding his character and ability to reach his potential.

As far as I'm concerned, in a trade for Kadri + Gardiner for Kipper, what matters is Gardiner. Kadri is just some icing on the cake. They could put just about anyone in that slot and I'd be fine with it. If people are fine with having a guy like Aliu on the team, they shouldn't have any problem with Kadri.

Yeah Nonis may be pressured to make a deal but I don't think he's going to do too many favours to the guy that badmouthed him when he was fired. Kadri is fair because he's never going to amount to a good player which is what you should expect going back for a mentally fragile goaltender signed to one of the worst contracts in the league.
You have to wonder if Nonis has the stones to make a deal with a guy he probably loathes more than any other in the NHL knowing that he has to make a deal that under normal circumstances he would never make. If Gillis is asking for Gardiner and other prospects and won't back down will Nonis be forced to make the deal? Will he be on borrowed time if he can't get it done? It's obvious the Panthers aren't in the discussion and Gillis really has no leverage outside the fact that Leafs ownership wants Luongo bad enough to fire a GM over it. IMO this is not really the ideal way to run a professional hockey team but hey it's the Maple Leafs.

Smart move by the Leafs, Nonis does all the actual work anyhow. Why pay Burke big bucks for nothing?

it is my understanding that the new CBA allows teams to trade away players and retain a portion of thier salary - to me this would seemingly make it easier to trade Lou, although his contract is long and that would presumably be an issue.
my question is do you think burke will get a ring when the leafs win the cup this year?

Well they will still have to pay Burke until his contract is up. He isn't an hourly employee filling beers.

Using this "logic", did Burke not just get fired for what Nonis has done?

No, Burke got fired because he has a big freakin mouth and the way he portrays himself to the media. The team has actually been set on the right track management wise.

Yeah, sorry, long day. The point is the Leafs are tired of this guy being the face of management, he comes off as a mouthy jerk.

If Gillis can somehow get Gardiner in a Luongo deal, then I'll give him some huge props.
Either that, or I'll call Nonis an idiot.
Or both.

I see. So he was fired for being a big mouth not because he made bad decisions...but it was Nonis making the bad decisions and he gets the gig?
Yet they retained Burke as an advisor...interesting.
Color me confused.

Who said Nonis made bad decisions? You? Nobody else is saying this move had anything to do with Burke or Nonis or management doing a bad job. It is the same thing that happened with Lowe in Edmonton or Gainey in Montreal, you move the guy to an advisor because the fans are not happy with the GM except in this case it is not so much the job Burke did but the fact that most Leafs fans did not like the way he spoke to the media. I live in Leaf country and know lots of Leaf fans, nobody had a problem with Burke's body of work, they just didn't like him because he comes off as a know it all a-hole.

Euphemism for firing in the NHL. Pat Quinn was retained as an advisor to the Oilers also.

I know he is a bit of a windbag and all....but you really believe he made good decisions (or Nonis did) but was fired for being a loudmouth?
Yeesh...that team really is in trouble if true.
A quick list of his major accomplishements via TSN
- July 1, 2009: Signed D Mike Komisarek to a five-year deal
- Sept. 18, 2009: Traded for F Phil Kessel for two first round picks (Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton) and a second round pick (Jared Knight)
- Jan. 31, 2010: Seven-player trade with Calgary, Leafs acquire D Dion Phaneuf
- Jan. 31, 2010: Traded for G J.S. Giguere
- Feb. 9, 2011: Traded D Francois Beauchemin to Anaheim for F Joffrey Lupul and D Jake Gardiner
- June 23, 2012: Traded D Luke Schenn to Flyers for F James Van Riemsdyk
- July 1, 2012: Signed F Jay McClement
Fired/Hired
- Fired coach Ron Wilson on Mar. 2, 2012 (received one year contract extension Dec. 25, 2011)
- Hired coach Randy Carlyle, 6-9-3 under Carlyle
1st Round Draft Picks
- 2012: Morgan Rielly
- 2011: Tyler Biggs, Stu Percy
- 2010: None
- 2009: Nazem Kadri
And my favorite one of all....
Lockout - Toronto: 0
- Columbus: 4
- Atlanta/Winnipeg: 4
- Islanders: 5
- Florida: 7
- (Seven straight seasons without a playoff appearance, franchise record)
But I will defer and believe that he was fired because fans didnt like his tone and attitude.

Well, Flames fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Burke won't be around to rape Calgary's franchise in ridiculously lop-sided trades again . . .
. . . until he's hired by Columbus later this week.
(I expect it'll be Luongo for Bozak, Gardiner and a pick.)
