Is this a known fact? Isn't this like some kind of real estate version of insider trading?

I believe that Bronconnier already owned a little land or a building near the proposed line, and he abstained from the vote because of it.

So it's being embellished?

He has had most of the land for over 10 years, and definitely did abstain from the vote.

Dave Bronconnier has championed the C-Train's westward expansion, but because of real estate he's owned along the line since his days as alderman, he has abstained from any decisions on the route alignment and the transit-oriented development plan.

Not if it had to be appropriated.

I guess it depends on how close the land is (and what type of zoning), but the denser a city tends to become the more valuable property close to public transportation gets. If he's got some commercial property next to a station, he's golden.
Either way, I think the WLRT is a pretty big positive for the city. If dude was smart enough to realize that land would become valuable in due time and snatched it up, good on him.

When the Transit Oriented Development plan got approved, some of his holdings had their zoning changed. This is a big deal, since property with zoning for higher density use is much more valuable. I don't think anything improper happened, but he was right to abstain, since he gained a significant personal financial benefit.

Club Sapien is a brand new small business started by a proud Calgarian. That is exactly the type of business that should drive the local economy and our Mayor should be talking more (rather than less) to this type of business.

I hated Bronco as mayor of this city. I did not like his personality, or his campaigning.
That being said, he did a damn good job if you ask me.
Best of luck in the future Dave.

Yep, I was never the biggest fan of the guy personally, but he did do quite a lot to upgrade city infrastructure in this city that had been completely ignored under Duerr's reign. Now where the infrastructure money was spent can be debated, but at the end of the day Calgary will have a new leg of the LRT, extended legs of existing ones, more buses and trains, and a significant upgrading to roads and interchanges for the drivers out there. Plus I like the way he fought the province in getting more of Calgary's share back.
People might not have agreed on what he did, but at least the guy got things done.

Bronconnier had a tough task. After some lean years of not building much infrastructure, people were demanding that roads, LRT, etc. be built. He campaigned on getting people moving, and he kept the promise. Of course, everybody wants the infrastructure and doesn't want to pay for it with a tax increase. I'm welcoming a change as much as everyone else, but I have to give him credit because he said that he'd build stuff, followed through, and bore the brunt of the criticism of the price tag. He was basically dealing with an infrastructure deficit left to him by previous administrations.
Not saying that city council didn't degrade into a dysfunctional mess in towards the end...

Shouldn't this thread and the PGT threads be merged? Same discussion in both places...

Since this is the Game Thread so to speak, it should be locked, so we can rant about blowing things up in the PGT.
